When the COVID-19 pandemic started, many things changed.
We started wearing masks; you have to take jabs in order to go anywhere, and if you work when you’re on MC, that could get you into huge trouble.
And that was what one Grab driver had to learn the hard way.
Grab Driver Allegedly Continue to Work Despite Being Issued a 5-Day MC
On 15 Jan 2021, 63-year-old Rahim Mahon visited Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic to seek medical treatment.
The doctor, then, issued him with a 5-day MC because he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory tract infection.
With this MC, Rahim was required to stay home from 15 to 19 Jan 2021.
Unfortunately, Rahim didn’t heed the instructions.
Allegedly Picked Up Seven Passengers Over Two Days
Instead of staying home, Rahim decided to return to work even though he might’ve contracted the coronavirus.
In total, he picked up seven passengers over the two days.
15 Jan 2021:
- Picked up a passenger from Pavilion Grove and drove them to Beach Road
- Picked up another passenger from Mackenzie Road and dropped them off at Mount Sophia
16 Jan 2021:
- Drove one passenger from Senja Link to Handy Road
- Drove a second passenger from Senja Road to Kaki Bukit
- Picked up one passenger and drove them from Reservoir Road to Cleantech Loop
- Another one from Jalan Bahar to Orchird Country Club
- One more from Yishun to Dempsey Road

Intends To Plead Guilty
It wasn’t known whether Rahim had actually contracted COVID-19 or not; however, the fact that he broke COVID-19 rules remains, and Rahim intends to plead guilty.
He will return to court in January to do so.
He was charged on 3 Nov 2021 and returned to court on 25 Nov 2021 for a further mention of his case.
Rahim currently faces two charges under the Infectious Diseases Act of exposing others to the risk of infection.
If found guilty, he could face a jail term of up to six months, a fine up to S$10,000, or both for each charge.
Jail For Flouting COVID-19 Rules
Now, for those who think, MC only mah, got so serious meh?
Just know that people have gone to jail for committing the same offence.
Earlier this year in June, a 40-year-old deliveryman was sentenced to four months in jail for continuing to work while on MC.
In September 2021, a 22-year-old woman was sentenced to three weeks’ jail for disregarding the MC, going out to meet her boyfriend and shop.
Meanwhile, another 22-year-old, this time an NSF, was sentenced to 18 weeks’ jail for going to Bugis Junction while on MC.
So the next time you’re given an MC, just stay home and fulfil the purpose of the medical certificate, which is to give you ample time to rest.
