A gunman holds 30 people as hostages at a popular shopping mall in a city east of Manila on Monday (2 March).

At least one person has been shot and taken to hospital, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora told reporters.

According to the Express, the victim was in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Gunshots were heard at V-Mall in San Juan’s Greenhills commercial district just before noon, after which thousands of shoppers, vendors, and mall staff fled for the exit.

But much like a Nolan movie, this story had a twist: the gunman was a disgruntled security guard who used to work at the mall.

The man was fired from his job weeks ago and had not been seen since. He returned on Monday to “make some demands”, said Mr Zamora.

The gunman fired at a staff member as he made his way to the mall’s administrative office. He then locked himself inside the office and held around 30 people who were inside as hostages.

“He seemed to have taken his firing badly.  He was trying to convince other guards to join him in some sort of coup d’etat against the mall management,” Mr Zamora said.

Taking your firing badly would be shouting at your boss or leaving a bag of dog poop outside the office, not bringing a gun, shooting at people, and taking people hostage.

What’s even scarier is that the gunman claimed he had grenades with him.

“But we have no way to confirm that”, Mr Zamora said. “What we can confirm is that he is armed with a pistol… He shot someone, so he’s hostile”.

Some shoppers were safely evacuated as the mall’s electronics and clothing stores were sealed off.

According to The Straits Times, videos posted on social media show police cars at the mall entrance and hundreds of onlookers.

The mall’s doors have all been locked. Mr Zamora himself was at the scene trying to negotiate with the gunman.

The man demanded to speak to fellow guards and the media, Mr Zamora said, but it was not clear if officials would agree to those conditions.

He also requested food and water, according to The New York Times.

More than a dozen SWAT commandos were earlier seen entering the shopping centre with their assault rifles ready.

Similar to shooting in Thai mall

You may recall a similar incident last month in Thailand where a soldier armed with an assault rifle went on a shooting rampage at a military base and a shopping mall there.

He killed at least 29 people and wounded 58.

Let’s hope that all 30 hostages are released safely and that no one else gets hurt.
