Golden Village’s cinema at Plaza Singapura has closed after 28 years, marking the end of an era for generations of moviegoers in Singapore.
The outlet’s final screenings took place on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
It had been operating at the Dhoby Ghaut mall since 1998, becoming a familiar destination for students, couples and anyone looking to catch a film in town.
Cinema Closed in Two Phases
Golden Village had announced in July that the cinema would wind down in stages ahead of redevelopment work at Plaza Singapura.
Six halls screened their final films on 2 August. The remaining halls continued operating until the cinema’s last day on 16 August.
When CNA previously asked whether Golden Village might return to Plaza Singapura after the renovation, the company said it had no confirmed plans to announce.
Moviegoers can instead visit nearby Golden Village cinemas at Cineleisure, Bugis+ and Funan.
Plaza Singapura Is Still Open
While the cinema has closed, the rest of Plaza Singapura remains open.
The closure is linked to an estimated S$160 million revamp covering both Plaza Singapura and the connected The Atrium@Orchard.
CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, which owns the properties, said the work would take place in phases from the third quarter of 2026 to the fourth quarter of 2028. Both developments are expected to remain operational during the project.
Planned changes include a redesigned Orchard Road entrance with dining spaces and greenery, upgrades to the basement connection with Dhoby Ghaut MRT station and a new facade at the Handy Road drop-off point.
The existing sky bridges on Levels 3 and 5 will also be turned into landscaped dining areas described as “floating gardens”.
Other parts of the mall will receive updated common areas, shopfronts and experiential retail and entertainment concepts.
So, Plaza Singapura is not disappearing. However, for those who spent their teenage years meeting friends outside GV before a movie, one particularly familiar part of the mall has now screened its closing credits.
