With Halloween dawning upon us in just one month, horror’s all the rage now.
(Kinda ironic, isn’t it? Considering the fact that we were all trying not to break the midnight mark when reaching home just a few days ago, because we didn’t want to share the lift with ‘somebody’)
But it’s understandable. As creepy as Halloween is, it’s a festive period, and people are bound to get pumped.
So what does Singapore have in line for us?
For one, we’ve Halloween Horror Nights 2017, that’s scheduled to open its gates tomorrow. (29 September 2017)
For two, we have a blood-stained woman being hanged by a rope at Scape.
Erm… no, I’m not kidding.
Disclaimer: the image below is rated ‘D’, for Disturbing. Disturbing in the sense that it might be something you see in your room, when you can’t sleep.
Oh hi there, Sadako! If you weren’t so high up in the sky I would have totally asked you out for a cup of coffee.
Halloween display
In an apparent attempt to stage a real life Pontianak scenario, a Museum of Horror vendor came up with the idea of planting a creepy life-sized female doll at Scape.
It was part of the horror attraction’s publicity efforts.
The display, while innovative, wasn’t exactly the most well-received.
For it has attracted quite a fair bit of… negativism.
Facebook page Singaporeans Defending Marriage and Family, in particular, was pretty resistant against the idea.
Here’s what is written:
This is extremely DISTURBING, done in very bad taste and traumatising to children! This is not meant for display in public spaces and definitely should NOT be endorsed by the Government! SCAPE is under the jurisdiction of NYC, National Youth Council Singapore, which is a government agency.
It’s no wonder the media reported children and teens suicidal rates had gone up!
Parents and Concerned Citizens, please write to CEO David Chua of NYC, and Minister Chan Chun Sing at [email protected] or his Facebook, or use the document below.

Halloween installation at SCAPE
We have become aware of a particular installation in the open area in front of the SCAPE building that is highly inappropriate and would strongly suggest that it be taken down as soon as possible. The display in question is that of a life size human figure in a bloodied white robe hanging by the neck off a rope tied to a tree.
Such a disturbing and realistic scene would be traumatising for children and even some young teenagers. Hence it should not be placed in a public thoroughfare where many children walking past (for eg to get to their lessons in the music and dance schools in SCAPE) will chance upon it.
Furthermore, in view of the rising suicide rate and prevalence of suicidal thoughts among young people, the image of a person who appears to have hanged herself being used to promote fun Halloween activities would surely trivialise the issue of suicide among young people. In fact, it might encourage some of them to attempt suicide in order to escape their troubles especially during this examination season where many already face stress, anxiety, or even depression.
Therefore, we sincerely hope that it would be removed as soon as possible to reduce the damage done to our children and youth.
Thank you for your kind attention!

Scape’s reply
Facebook Page ‘Singaporeans Defending Marriage and Family’ wasn’t the only party that was adverse to the idea either.
In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, the executive director of Suicide prevention centre SOS, Ms Christine Wong, had this to say.
“SOS reached out to *SCAPE to advise them that it was an inappropriate depiction of suicide which may be traumatising for the young or vulnerable. The mannequin could also act as a trigger for those with past experience related to suicide.”
SOS also provided some guidelines for organisations to follow when pushing out Halloween events.
These include not depicting suicides or the process of suicides explicitly or prominently. They should also make sure that suicide is not presented in an entertaining angle.
“Disclaimers or warnings of overly graphic or suicide-related content should also be put up appropriately.”
Scape has since released a statement.
“The mannequin was installed as part of the Museum of Horror’s publicity efforts. We have received feedback about the mannequin, and after reviewing internally, we informed the vendor to have it removed from the open public area. We hope that the youths will still have an enjoyable Halloween experience at the Museum of Horrors.”
Sadako has since been taken down. Sayonara, my long lost love.
I hope you have fun back in your well.
You know, maybe they should just get Sadako to appear out of nowhere and frighten people at malls.
But I’m pretty sure that will violate some societal law too. #justsaying
Just a month ago, netizens complained about a RWS Halloween Horror Nights advertisement that used memorials but RWS stood firm.
Also, it’s revealed that this isn’t the first time this publicity campaign Scape publicized their event this way. It’s just that in 2017, so maybe, just maybe, Singaporeans have become slightly more…edgy.
More righteous.
