Higher Fines for People Who Anyhowly Park in HDB / URA Carparks

Come on, admit it: very often, you’ve parked your car in a red lot when you’re not a season parking ticket owner, simply because you don’t want to go all the way up to the top of the floor that has the white lots.

Or sometimes, you just can’t find any white lots, and you just anyhowly park at a red lot.

Because deep in your mind, you’re thinking, Aiya, just for a while only, summon auntie wouldn’t be so free to catch one lah. Now all EPS liao won’t kena one.

You might want to think twice now.

While the number of summon aunties hasn’t increased, the fines are set to increase from 1 July 2019.

And also, summon aunties are still active.

Current Fines

Chances are, you don’t even know what the current fines are, except that it’s more expensive than the parking fees.

Here’s a list for you to glance through (just the common ones; turns out there are many types of offences):

  • Anyhowly Parking (outside a parking lot): $50
  • Parking in a season parking lot when you don’t have season parking: $50
  • Parking without coupon or digital coupon: $30
  • Parking with coupon but has overshot the timeframe: $6 to $20

And interestingly enough, there’s actually a fine for tailgating (I’ve always thought that you’ll be sent to the jail immediately for cheating): for tailgating out of a gantry, the fine would be $50, and most likely a middle finger from the car in front.

New Fines

The last revision was made in 1991, and it’s not a surprise that this change is overdue.

To simplify things, I’ll just C&P the above offences and add the additional amount you’d have to pay in red if you commit the offence from July 2019 onwards:

  • Anyhowly Parking (outside a parking lot): $50 + $20
  • Parking in season parking lot when you don’t have season parking: $50 + $20
  • Parking without coupon or digital coupon: $30 + $10
  • Parking with coupon but has overshot the timeframe: $6 to $20 (Doubled)
  • Tailgating: $50 + $20

Do note that these are for cars; motorcycles and heavy vehicles have different rates and they’ve increased too.

Shocking Numbers

Guess how many summons were issued a year?

For anyhowly parking or parking in red lots without season parking, there were about 260,800 notices (i.e. people who were caught).

For parking without a coupon / digital coupon, or parking beyond the coupon timeframe, a total of about 573,000 notices were issued.

And for tailgating, about 4,400 notices were issued.

In other words, don’t pray pray: while most HDB / URA car parks are using EPS now, summon aunties are still active.
