Would you stay in such a house?
A house where skeletal remains were found? You know, a place which will easily qualify as a haunted house by today’s standards?
I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure most people would do their best to stay away from this place.
The house in question belonged to two elderly sisters, Pearl and Ruby Tan, who were both presumed dead under an order by the high court in 2015.
In 2015, skeletal remains were found in the house at 17 Jalan Batai, a place close to Upper Thomson Road. A contractor was clearing debris from the house when he came across a human skull and femur in the guest room.
The authorities were alerted, and the police reportedly found more skeletal remains in that very guest room. The remains are believed to belong to one of the sisters.
However, this was not the only case which made the house famous.
Approximately a decade ago, environment officers entered the house to conduct a mosquito breeding check. And like a scene right out of a horror movie, the officers discovered skeletal remains of a human lying on top of a toilet.
While people have been speculating and simply assumed the identities of the skeletons to be that of Madam Pearl and Ruby Tan, there has been no conclusive proof.
Further investigations have also revealed that Madam Pearl Tan had apparently left Singapore through the Woodlands Checkpoint in 2004.
She never returned to Singapore.
Some of you might be spooked out after reading the story. But more than anything else, I just feel an overwhelming sense of sadness.
If you think about it, it’s a tale of two sisters being forgotten by the world and the people around them. With such a possibly depressing history behind the house, who would actually want to buy it?
As it turns out, the Public Trustee’s Office (PTO), which is the administrator for the estates of deceased persons, has contacted Knight Frank to put up the property for auction.
Using the properties around the region as a rough gauge, the house at 17 Jalan Batai will be going for between $1.7 million to $1.9 million.
According to Sharon Lee, the head of auction of Knight Frank: “Those interested in the property offered for sale by PTO will have to bid at the auction on Feb 27.”
“There will be no private treaty deals conducted before or after the auction,” she added.
With the other houses beside 17 Jalan Batai being redeveloped into 2½-storey houses, it’s highly likely that this house would be torn down and rebuilt.
What about you guys? Would you buy this house if you have the money?
