A suspicious encounter between an e-scooter rider and a pedestrian turned into a police chase yesterday when officers approached them.
The 61-year-old pedestrian was eventually caught with white powder believed to be drugs, while his accomplice managed to escape on the electric scooter.
Here’s what happened.
Police Presence at Multiple Locations
A reader alerted the news agency at about 2:00 PM yesterday (15 Mar 2025) about a large police presence at Block 177 in Boon Lay.
Video footage showed approximately 10 officers at the scene conducting investigations.
The reader also reported seeing at least three police vehicles at Boon Lay Community Club, about 400 meters away from the apartment block, suggesting a coordinated police operation across multiple locations.
When questioned, police stated that traffic officers on patrol at 11:30 AM spotted a male rider on an electric scooter making an illegal U-turn at the junction of Boon Lay Place and Boon Lay Avenue.
This traffic violation ultimately led to the discovery of the suspected drug-related activity.
As officers approached the rider, he allegedly fled with a pedestrian nearby. The quick escape attempt raised suspicions among the officers, who immediately pursued the duo.
Officers later apprehended the 61-year-old pedestrian and found suspected controlled substances on him. He was subsequently arrested for drug-related offenses.
The e-scooter rider, however, managed to evade capture and remains at large.
Witness Accounts of the Arrest
The pedestrian was reportedly arrested near the junction, outside the Boon Lay Community Club, where several witnesses observed the police action unfold.
A 56-year-old cleaner at the community club, said she was sweeping when she saw an older man being handcuffed on the roadside.
Officers searched him thoroughly and removed several items from his pockets, placing them on the ground before photographing them as evidence.
“I saw the man pass by the community club before the incident. I’ve seen him pass through here sometimes in the mornings or afternoons, which is why I recognized him,” she said.
Mr. Tang (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 28-year-old who witnessed the arrest, provided additional details about the items seized.
He said that besides a wallet, officers found a package of white powder about the size of a mobile phone on the man.
“I heard the man tell the officers that he typically ‘collects goods’ or conducts transactions in the corner with plants outside the community club, an area that has surveillance cameras,” Tang said.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing, with authorities still searching for the e-scooter rider who escaped during the incident.
