This year’s Cannes Film Festival is the gift that keeps on giving.
Aside from the announcement of new films from big-name directors like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, fans of the Hong Kong martial arts film series Ip Man received good news as well.
Ip Man will soon be back on the big screen for a fifth instalment of the famous film series.

The release of Ip Man 5 will mark the 15th anniversary of the martial arts film series.
Yes, you read that right—the first instalment of Ip Man was released in 2008. Are you feeling old yet?
However, this announcement has left many baffled. If you didn’t watch Ip Man 4, the Wing Chun master played by Yen died—the film had wrapped up with Ip Man’s student, Bruce Lee, attending Ip Man’s funeral.
So, if our main character is dead, how is there supposed to be an Ip Man 5? The fourth instalment was literally named Ip Man 4: The Finale—how is there supposed to be anything after the finale?
Well, that’s the least of our concerns. Netizens have already devised several theories about the film, so you need not put on your thinking caps now.
Netizens’ Theories on the Storyline of Ip Man 5
Ploughing through the comments on Yen’s Instagram post of the Ip Man 5 poster, you’ll find several fans bouncing ideas about the new instalment.
Multiple netizens speculated that the new film would focus more on one of Ip Man’s students, Bruce Lee.
Well, that still doesn’t account for Yen’s role in the movie. A more probable theory is that Ip Man 5 will be a prequel to the existing four films.
Several netizens also had fun with their theories, crossing the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the Ip Man universe. One particular netizen suggested that perhaps Ip Man somehow got hold of the powerful infinity stones from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So… is Ip Man the new Thanos?
Another netizen, probably a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse of madness, suggested that perhaps a variant of Ip Man from another universe will step into the film series in the new instalment.
Talk about creativity.

Another netizen also referred to The Terminator franchise and shared that although Ip Man appeared to have died in the last movie, viewers should remember that “Heroes never die”.
Regardless, netizens can only continue to speculate what is in store in Ip Man 5 for now. The movie’s producer, Raymond Wong, shared that Ip Man 5′s script has yet to be finalised.
It’s time to make a bet with your friends—which theory are you behind?
59-Year-Old Yen to Star in Two Other New Films
At the Cannes Film Festival, Mandarin Motion Pictures also announced aside from Ip Man 5, Yen will star in two other new films.
These two films are Flash Point: Resurgence, a sequel to the 2007 action film Flash Point, and Misjudgement.

For the benefit of the Gen Zs who haven’t heard of Flash Point until today, the movie follows an inspector pursuing a Vietnamese-Chinese gang.
Yen starred in the 2007 movie Flash Point alongside other big names like Louis Koo and Fan Bingbing. However, it is unclear whether, aside from Yen, the original cast will return for Flash Point: Resurgence.
However, one thing’s sure: Yen is not retiring from the action film scene anytime soon.
The 59-year-old had shared that he hopes to continue acting in Chinese-language action movies. Earlier this year, we also saw Yen on the big screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, the fourth instalment of the popular action film series.
