ITE College Central Roof Collapsed During Downpour; Apparently Caused by Malfunction in a Roof Pump

There are some things you don’t expect to see in life.

Like PM Lee wearing a Hawaiian shirt to give a speech, a baby carrying a briefcase and going to work, or a pigeon solving a complex mathematical sum.

You’d also never expect the roof of your school to collapse, but then again, it’s 2020, and anything can happen.

ITE College Central Roof Collapsed During Downpour

A malfunctioning pump literally brought the roof down at ITE College Central on Tuesday (10 Nov).

A video of the incident was shared by SgfollowsAll in an Instagram post on the same day.

In the video, water can be seen cascading from a hole in the roof inside the school, meaning it must have been raining, and heavily at that.

It looked almost beautiful, and one netizen joked it was superior to Jewel’s indoor waterfall.

In the video, the ground appears to be cordoned off, meaning the video must have been taken some time after the collapse.

Made a Mess on the Floor

While most schools don’t have indoor waterfalls, and some students may have been in awe of the strange sight, the collapse also caused quite a mess later on.

See, the hole in the roof was right above a small landscape garden, meaning the water streaming through from the skies was dropping from quite a height onto the garden.

As a result, the soil ended up loosening and splashing all over the ground floor. Puddles of muddy water also spread all over the floor.

After some time, it looked like a giant had taken a quick poop on the ground floor of Block A before running away from the scene.

So, what caused this mess?

Caused By Malfunctioning Roof Pump

In response to queries by MS Newsan ITE spokesperson said a segment of the “bubble fly roof” at ITE Headquarters had collapsed due to a malfunction roof pump.

The malfunctioning pump caused rainwater to accumulate on the school’s roof.

Under the weight of the rainwater, a part of the roof’s bubble membrane gave way and water flowed to Level 1 of Block A, he said.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the collapse.

Repair works are under way, the spokesperson said.

A similar incident occurred in the Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2017, when a false ceiling collapsed due to an accumulation of water that leaked through from a drainage pipe above it.

No one was hurt there either.
