If you’re rich and famous, you can basically get anything you desire in life, except privacy.

Once you’re well-known, even a trip to the supermarket can end in hundreds of fans crowding around you, preventing you from buying that much-needed roll of toilet paper.

And if they snap a photo of you buying that roll of toilet paper, you’re probably going to wake up the next day to a headline like Celeb Buys Toilet Paper So He Can Finally Poop!

Yes, having every part of your private life documented is one of the unavoidable parts of being a celebrity.

Just ask Jay Chou.

Jay Chou Triggered After CCTV Image of Him in a Restaurant Was Leaked

The owner of a popular Italian restaurant in Taichung has been slammed by Mandopop star Jay Chou and his fans after releasing CCTV footage of the star dining with two friends.

The restaurant apologised soon after the online backlash.

According to Taiwan News, Chou took a trip to Taichung recently and shared pictures of his time there, saying there had been a lot of fun things to do in the city.

One of the establishments he visited was an Italian eatery, where he had a meal with his two friends. Unbeknownst to Chou, screenshots of him at their premises would later be uploaded online.

One of the reasons the screengrabs went viral is that the waitress serving Chou didn’t recognise him, even after he took off his sunglasses.

Netizens kindly bestowed upon the waitress the title of “the blindest person in Taiwan”, reported 8 Days.

Later on, in an interview with Taiwanese media, the waitress said she did think it was Chou for a second, but decided it couldn’t be so because Chou “isn’t so fat”.

But it wasn’t the fact that he wasn’t recognised that angered Chou, of course. Quite the opposite.

In addition to the shot of the waitress taking his order, screenshots of Chou entering the establishment and dining also made its way online.

Chou lashed out at the restaurant in a series of Instagram stories for invading his privacy and uploading footage of him without his permission.

“Can someone help me ask what’s the point of taking photos of security footage??? Is this a service that’s supposed to be provided by a restaurant? Helping their customers take photos of their security footage?” he said.

His record company JVR Music also said that the restaurant should not release private screenshots of their guests without their consent.

Restaurant Apologised

After incurring the wrath of both Chou and fans, the restaurant owner apologised to Chou in a Facebook post on the same day the footage was leaked.

“First of all, we would like to say sorry to Mr Jay Chou, we’re really sorry. All we wanted was to fulfil the wishes of the staff member who served you, and we did not expect the images to be circulated among other communities. We are very sorry for the trouble we have caused you.”

If you’re confused by the second sentence, you’re not the only one. According to the restaurant, the reason the screenshots were uploaded was that the oblivious waitress who later found out she had served Chou wanted a souvenir of the moment.

Yes, she finally realised she was serving the real Jay Chou.

So, the restaurant sent her screenshots of the CCTV footage. Wanting to share her encounter with a celebrity, the waitress posted the screenshots on her personal Facebook account, only to have them leaked by one of her friends.

Yes, all she wanted to do was share some cool photos with her friends and she ended up angering a celebrity and earning the title “the blindest person in Taiwan”.

After the restaurant posted its apology, Chou took down his Instagram posts, and no further comment was made.

So, if you’re a restaurant owner and a celebrity happens to dine at your restaurant, it probably isn’t a good idea to share footage of them without their consent.

And if you’re a waiter/waitress, keep your eyes peeled for big names when you take orders, unless you want to be labelled “blind” by thousands of strangers.
