SAF Reviewing Policies To Help Soldiers Quit Smoking
When the minimum age for smoking was raised, Singapore suddenly has a lot more underaged smokers than before.
The current minimum age for smoking is 19, but it will be raised every year until 21 years old in 2021.
Mindef says that the SAF is reviewing therapies recommended by the Health Promotion Board (HPB), as well as existing measures like counselling, punishments and medical aid.
More than 200 personnel has been trained to counsel fellow colleagues about the adverse effects of smoking, and Mindef hopes to make it 400 by 2021.
So, NSFs, if you want to quit smoking, it might be a good idea to talk to your OC about it.
Starhub Has Best Mobile Data Speed But Not The Best Coverage
Speed or coverage, which would you choose?
This question became legit with United Kingdom-based wireless technology company OpenSignal’s report.
They found that Starhub has the best download and upload speed on mobile data, “three-times” the global average for 4G networks.
Singtel and M1 came in at “beyond double the global average speed”.
The global 4G average download speed is 16.9 Mbps. Starhub comes in at 51 Mbps. Singtel’s speed was logged at 45.4 Mbps and M1, 41.9 Mbps.
However, when it comes to 4G availability, Singtel is king with users able to connect to the 4G network 90 percent of the time.
So what about M1? Don’t worry, because they came in first for 4G latency. Meaning, you’ll lag less when you play online games plus better online calls.
Moral of the story: no matter which telco you’re signed with, you’re in good hands. They’re all above world-class.
Here’s the saddest part about the whole thing though: My Singtel home Wifi connection still sucks.
Low-Wage Workers To Get One-Off Special Payment Of $300-600
But like with all good things, there’s a catch.
On 31 May 2018, the National Wages Council (NWC) proposed that companies give their employees earning up to $1,300 a one-time special payment of $300 to $600.
The proposal is for companies who enjoyed productivity gains the past year, and they hope that with this move, it shows that companies are willing to share productivity gains with employees.
This will get the workers to work harder together with the company for the next year.
While they had proposed that companies should give special payments to all workers regardless of wage level, they did not specify a figure for the payment besides the one for lower income workers.
Besides the one-off payment, the council is also proposing a wage increase between $50 and $70 for low wage workers.
So what’s the catch? Everything sounds good so far.
Yup, but the key word here is proposal. Companies can choose not to accept it. #JustSaying
M’sians Shows Patriot Side By Donating Nearly USD 1.8 Million Within 24 Hours
How much do you love your country? Our brothers and sisters across the causeway showed that they love their country very, very much.
Within 24 hours after the Hope Fund was set up by the Malaysian government, Malaysians donated nearly USD 1.8 million.
Within. 24. Hours.
The Malaysian government set up the fund after young activist and law graduate Shazarina Bakti started a crowdfunding initiative to help pay for the RM 1 trillion national debt.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that “the government will be transparent with every sen received” and updates will be provided on the Finance Ministry’s website and social media platforms.
Law Firm Who Allegedly Called Customer ‘Retarded’ Last Year Strikes Again
It’s one thing to have poor customer service, it’s another to be labelled offensive.
Unfortunately for this law firm, they’ve been branded the latter. And if the allegations against them are true, then they kind of deserve it.
On 31 May, STOMP reported that a law firm called a potential client a dog.
Here’s what happened.
A man approached the law firm, Vexus Law, asking about applying for a deed poll. He sent a message as instructed by the firm’s website.
After 4 days of no response, he sent a message again. And again because he forgot to change the date.
Finally, irritated by the non-response, he told the firm that their “service standard is pathetic”.
Shit hits the fan.
The Singapore Law Society said that they are unable to comment or investigate as no complaints were made to them regarding Vexus Law.
This is the same law firm that made the internet news for calling a woman a “retard” last year.
