Ever since Squid Game premiered on Netflix, everyone has been talking about it.
I mean, you would know why if you’ve actually watched it. It’s so good.
For the uninitiated, Squid Game is a nine-episode thriller series that follows 456 participants who are pit against one another in a mysterious survival game.
There are a total of six Korean childhood games that they have to clear, and the last one standing, aka the last one alive, will be able to take home a grand prize of KRW45.6 billion (~S$51.9 million).
The cast of Squid Game was recently invited onto The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where they talked about starring in Squid Game, the show’s popularity, and the origin of the Red Light, Green Light robot doll.
And while Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-Soo, and Wi Ha-Joon spoke in their native language, Korean, Jung Ho-Yeon spoke in perfect English.
In response to the question regarding the origin of the creepy robot doll that appeared in the first game, Jung, who plays player 067, Kang Sae-Byeok, excitedly explained that the robot was designed based on a girl character that appeared in Korean school textbooks called Young-Hee. The boy character was called Cheol-Soo.
The two characters were seen as best friends and were found in textbooks in the 1970s and 1980s.
There was also a series on the two characters called The Text Book by Suk Khun Oh where they both signify the power of childhood memories.
This just makes the first game seem even more disturbing, doesn’t it?
It was obvious that Jung had been speaking English for a while now based on her fluency, and many netizens were impressed by her English-speaking ability.
Before she debuted as an actress with Squid Game, she was actually a model. In 2013, she participated in the fourth season of Korea’s Next Top Model, the spin-off of the American reality TV show, America’s Next Top Model, and emerged second at the end of the season.
In 2016, she moved to New York and worked with The Society Management, a New York model management company. From there, she made her international debut as an exclusive with Louis Vuitton and went on to model for many other big companies like Marc Jacobs, Fendi, and Max Mara.
In an interview with Models.com back in 2018, Jung revealed that she had an interest in acting, and started learning more English because she believed that it would allow her to be one step closer to her dreams. She took a particular interest in the action genre and commented that she could see herself in films such as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
If you can’t get enough of Jung’s English, you can also take a look at a video that she did with Vogue back in 2018 where she goes through her skincare routine and shows a makeup look at the end!
