Police Investigate Alleged Unauthorised Transactions Linked to Koufu Eat App

If you’ve been using the Koufu Eat app, you should probably check your bank statements and make sure there haven’t been any unauthorised transactions made on your card.

Several users of the app reported that unauthorised transactions were made on their cards after they added their cards to the Koufu Eat app.

Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Users Report Unauthorised Transactions Allegedly Linked to Koufu Eat App

If you haven’t heard of the Koufu Eat app, it’s essentially an app that allows you to skip the snaking lunch-hour queues at Koufu food courts. You can order your meal and pay through the app, before collecting your meal from the respective Koufu food court.

It sounds great, except that users of the app have recently reported certain unauthorised transactions on their cards which they claim are linked to the Koufu Eat app. Several have left reviews about it on Google Play.

These reports first started flowing in in late October 2024. On 26 October last year, a user left a Google Play review for the Koufu Eat app, sharing that although they added their card details to the app, none of the details showed up.

Instead, they later received an alert stating that their card was added to Google Pay. The user made a police report afterwards.

Approximately one month later, on 3 December, a similar Google Play review for the Koufu Eat app surfaced. The user shared that fraudulent transactions were made on their card after they added their DBS credit card to the Koufu Eat app.

A Google Play review made by yet another user on 21 December echoed the same sentiments. The user shared that when they first attempted to add a payment method to the Koufu Eat app, they received several error messages.

A few weeks later, the user’s DBS card was used for unauthorised transactions. The user added that they rarely used their DBS card for purchases, and that it was the first time their card was used for unauthorised transactions.

“Not sure if its linked to this app or app is compromised. Just be alert,” the user wrote in the Google Play review.

It was the month of December lah, so perhaps scammers were feeling like treating themselves to a little Christmas gift, and decided to use the cards of Koufu Eat users to pay for it. On 31 December, another user posted a Google Play review for the Koufu Eat app.

And you guessed it — it also has to do with unauthorised transactions linked to the app.

The user shared that after they attempted adding their DBS credit card as a payment method on the app, fraudulent charges were made to their credit card.

According to CNA, a woman named Celine shared that she initially tried using her husband’s card to make payment on the app when they visited a Koufu food court in Tengah in mid-December. However, they were repeatedly prompted by the app to key in a One-Time Password (OTP) for the transaction.

Suffice it to say, the transaction did not go through in the end lah.

Instead, about ten days later, Celine’s husband suddenly had €500 (S$709) charged to his card.

At the time of writing, there do not appear to be similar reviews on Apple’s App Store about such unauthorised transactions linked to the Koufu Eat app.

Police Investigations Ongoing

Koufu has since lodged a report with the police.

According to Koufu, the Koufu Eat app does not store customers’ credit card details, as it utilises eNETS as its payment gateway instead.

Police investigations are currently ongoing.

So, what do you think happened? Do you think the unauthorised transactions were linked to the Koufu Eat app, or did the transactions just coincide with the users downloading the app?
