Just two days after Aljunied GRC MP Faisal Manap was hospitalised in the ICU for a heart condition, People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Liang Eng Hwa, a Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang SMC, released a statement detailing his nose cancer diagnosis on his Facebook page.
In Mr Liang’s statement, he first discovered his condition after experiencing muffled hearing in his left ear, which led him to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.
After undergoing a nasal endoscopy and biopsy, and undergoing subsequent computed tomography (an advanced form of X-ray scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, the Bukit Panjang MP was found to have Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).
Nasopharyngeal cancer occurs in the cells lining the area behind the nose and just above the back of the throat. According to Singaporean healthcare platform HealthHub, NPC is one of the most common cancers in males in Singapore.
Mr Liang to Take Time Off for 2 Months to Recuperate From Side Effects of Cancer Treatment
Standard cancer treatments such as radiotherapy often have side effects such as extreme fatigue and problems with concentration. As such, Mr Liang decided to take time off during his seven-week treatment period.
He also stated that he may have to take time off from some community activities and duties in the months following his treatment.
In the meantime, other members from the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, such as Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and Mr Edward Chia, will take over the duties that Mr Liang is unable to attend to.
Mr Liang also assured residents that the Bukit Panjang grassroots team will continue to serve residents as well as resume community programmes and activities.
Many netizens have responded to Liang’s post with comments wishing him a speedy recovery, with other PAP MPs such as Baey Yam Keng and Denise Phua sending him their well wishes.
Most notably, Baey Yam Keng was battling a similar cancer diagnosis in November 2021.
Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng Was Also Diagnosed With Stage 1 Nose Cancer
During a regular eye check for glaucoma, it was discovered that a small area of limited vision was present in Mr Baey’s right eye.
After subsequent tests, a cancerous tumour containing Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA was found in his right nasal passage. The virus increases the chances of an individual developing nasopharyngeal cancers.
Since the cancer was only stage one, Mr Baey only needed to undergo radiotherapy and no chemotherapy was required. He continued to attend public events since the treatment did not affect his immunity.
On 22 April 2022, Baey Yam Keng posted on Facebook that the tumour in his nose was gone. There were also no traces of EBV DNA left in his blood.
