Currently, in Singapore, 77 overhead bridge had lifts installed as of last year, and 30 are scheduled to receive the same treatment over the next three years, bringing the total to 107.
Usually, these are the ones located next to MRT stations.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has reportedly called for two tenders to determine whether or not lifts can be installed at 250 overhead bridges, as reported by The Straits Times.
However, it is highly improbable that all 250 bridges in question will be retrofitted with lifts due to site constraints and expenses.
LTA emphasised the need of placing elevators in convenient locations for people with mobility issues and the elderly.
Need More Study to Confirm
The tenders are calls for site investigation works as well as architectural and engineering consultancy services, and the completion of the study is the only way to know for sure how many overhead bridges will be chosen, where they will be placed, or when the project would begin.
The two bids will be broken up into four batches, the first three of which will involve 30 bridges each and the fourth 35 bridges.
Technical feasibility studies, including site surveys, will need to be performed by the designated consultants at each potential site to determine the availability of space and the viability of construction.
Tenders for the works to install the lifts at the selected overhead bridges for retrofitting won’t be called until 2024 for the first batch, and 2026 for the next three batches, as per the viewed documents.
According to Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Selfie King Baey Yam Keng in March 2022, it takes 14 to 22 months to retrofit an overhead bridge with lifts due to the extensive amount of preliminary work involved, including site surveys and technical studies.
In other words, by the time you see the lifts, you might be old enough to use them.
