All of Us Are Dead Actor Lim Jae-hyuk Still Has to Work Part-Time to Make Ends Meet Despite the Show’s Success

Lim Jae-hyuk Still Working Part-Time After Success of All of Us are Dead

If you’ve watched the hit zombie horror series All of Us Are Dead on Netflix, you’re probably no stranger to actor Lim Jae-hyuk, who acted as Yang Dae-su in the show.

And although it goes without saying that the series was nothing but a success when it was released, he may not be living the lavish lifestyle that we thought an actor from a series that did so remarkably well would.

In fact, he actually still works part-time jobs in order to support himself.

Hey, I work part-time jobs too. Does that make me the same as him?

Well… Never mind.

Financial Status Has Remained “Largely Similar”

Lim, who is 27 this year, recently revealed on South Korean variety show You Quiz on the Block that his financial status has remained “largely similar” despite the success of All of Us Are Dead.

He explained, “Apart from the drama doing well, there’s nothing special that changed about my bank account. I spend between 900,000 won (approximately S$1,000) and 1 million won (approximately S$1,117) for a month’s rent and living expenses, so I’m only working to earn that much.

“The monthly rent is about 400,000 won (approximately S$447) a month, so I only have to do five part-time courier jobs, and I can work for a week or two to earn 600,000 won (approximately S$670) a month for living expenses.”

However, after his appearance on the show, the actor has seen his Instagram account grow to have over 787,000 followers, which can’t be a bad thing when you’re in the entertainment industry.

Future entertainment industry hopefuls, take notes.

Tried Various Jobs

On the show, Lim also mentioned the various types of part-time jobs he has tried out in the past. These jobs include working in a fish store, a butcher’s shop, a mart and even working as a waiter.

“I was even working as a designated driver four days ago,” he added.

When asked about his jobs, he actually mentioned that he found being a paid designated driver the best but also most difficult job.

He also brought up how he had a difficult encounter with a passenger who was drunk. He recalled, “I had to deal with a drunken person, so there was a time I called to say I was on my way and ran for a kilometre, but the customer didn’t answer the phone.

“The subway was about to stop running soon, and I kept calling but he didn’t answer the phone. When he did, he cursed at me saying, ‘If I don’t answer the phone, you should have understood that I don’t need your service anymore and you should have cancelled and gone away.’

“At that time, the subway already stopped running, so I remember going to the convenience store to eat cup noodles waiting for the late-night bus.”

Squid Game’s Hwang Dong-hyuk Experienced Something Similar

Although we may find Lim’s experience shocking as compared to the luxurious lifestyles that we’re used to seeing celebrities lead, he’s actually not the first well-known celebrity to work part-time jobs.

Another celebrity from another popular Netflix K-Drama series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, also echoed similar sentiments after starring in Squid Game last year.

Hwang, the creator of Squid Game, directed and wrote the widely-beloved series.

So, yes, Squid Game literally would not exist today if Hwang didn’t work on it.

However, it seems like its success did not bring about many changes to Hwang’s bank account.

Last year, Hwang mentioned in an interview with The Guardian, ” I’m not that rich. But I do have enough. I have enough to put food on the table. And it’s not like Netflix is paying me a bonus. Netflix paid me according to the original contract.”

Yup, no extra pay for Hwang despite the success that the series achieved.

So, uh, if you’ve been thinking about becoming a millionaire by somehow writing a drama and having it get picked up by Netflix, maybe it’s better to stick to writing on Wattpad as you find a “proper” job for now.
