Restaurant Owners Challenge SDAs & Say They ‘Traumatised’ Diners

While Safe Distancing Ambassadors (SDAs) have been present for most of the past two years since the COVID-19 pandemic started, there are still some actions by them that we’re probably not too used to yet.

For example, taking a measuring tape out to see if chairs in a restaurant are at least one metre apart.

During opening hours.

Nope, put down your calendar. This isn’t April Fool’s.

If you’ve been on social media recently, you might have seen the following video:

Yes, your eyes aren’t lying to you. That is a measuring tape.

In the video, two SDAs was seen literally measuring the distance between two chairs at different tables while some diners were having their meal. The diners looked mostly bewildered, while the person filming the video, presumably the restaurant owner, went up to question the SDA’s actions afterwards.

The individual filming the video then walked out of the restaurant with the SDA following behind, presumably so that they wouldn’t end up making a scene and disrupting the other diners.

Another man in a white shirt at around the 1:54 mark in the video also proceeded to grill the SDAs by asking why Safe Management Measures (SMM) were not enforced at another establishment.

The man was heard saying, “In the mall, there was at least 15 people queue in one line, why nobody taking action then?”

Oof.

The individual filming the video then asked the SDAs to leave and proceed to the next establishment to “do their job”.

The SDAs then continued to ask if the men were aware of the one-metre rule and continued to explain their rationale, albeit in a less-than-convincing manner.

The men also told the SDAs that their actions had caused diners to leave during their meal. Another man, presumably a diner, also came out to speak up against the SDAs.

In their words, the SDAs had “traumatised his eating experience”.

They then asked what the SDAs were going to do next after traumatising the customers as the SDAs continued to clarify their actions.

The man filming the video then proceeded to follow the SDAs as they went to the next eatery to conduct checks.

Throughout the video, the text “This is so unnecessary” can be seen near the bottom of the video, proved by the men’s impatient reactions towards the SDAs.

The video itself was posted with the caption, “So serious ah?” along with a few emojis, and I guess that’s the question that most of us are asking ourselves now as well.

Netizens’ Reaction

Despite the video only being posted around a day ago (21 March), it has already garnered over 12,500 views and 181 comments from netizens all across the island.

And it seems like there’s been a pretty clear line drawn between the two parties, with some netizens supporting the restaurant owners and others supporting the SDAs.

Apart from the criticism that many had to offer the SDAs, there were also other opinions that netizens posted in the comments section of the video.

Of course, some people found the entire situation hilarious, and felt that it was a mockery of what Singaporean society has become.

Others also acknowledged the fact that the SDAs were just trying to do their job and keep everyone safe, but noted that they could have carried out their duties in a better manner.

On the other hand, there were also comments that showed support for the SDAs’ actions, claiming that they did absolutely nothing wrong.

Well, saying that you’re traumatised because someone pulled out a measuring tape to see how far two chairs are between each other does sound a little exaggerated, I guess.

Other netizens then poked fun at the situation, and made comments that were… theoretically true, I suppose.

Yalah, the SDAs clearly weren’t one metre apart from the diners when they were measuring the distance between the chairs.

However, with the end of the COVID-19 pandemic still far from being in sight, it’s probably best for everyone if we just learn how to live and compromise on both sides when it comes to situations like this lah.
