Man’s Limited Edition SIA Batik Mahjong Set Allegedly Has Wrong Tiles

Mahjong is often played during Chinese New Year to earn extra cash amidst fun times.

But what if mahjong tiles, not luck, are not in your favour?

One person took to Instagram to share that his set of $388 limited edition Singapore Airlines (SIA) batik mahjong was not correct.

Mistake In Limited Edition Mahjong Set

On Chinese New Year’s eve this year (31 Jan), an Instagram user posted this image on his story.

With mahjong tiles placed in neatly arranged rows, you can spot an extra “three circles” tile protruding from the edge, while there is a space where a “five circles” tile is supposed to be.

Lest you’re not aware, there are supposed to be four tiles for each of the mahjong suits — bamboo, characters and circles; not three or five tiles.

The man also mentioned that he had been “playing for a few rounds after opening the new set” before realising the mistake in the mahjong set.

Even though we can’t be sure if anyone lost money when playing, we can be sure that some players unfairly lost some rounds.

Which is bad because mahjong? It’s serious business.

What Is Singapore Airline’s Response?

It seems that tagging SIA’s Instagram account might have worked for the man — SIA’s flagship retailer KrisShop said that they have since “reviewed his purchase and make arrangements for the affected tiles.”

“We remain committed to delivering quality products and are investigating the matter internally to ensure that this issue doesn’t happen again,” they added to their response.

Mahjong Pieces With Unique Designs

Mahjong is a treasured, quintessential activity; played during Chinese New Year and casual gatherings.

The highly coveted mahjong set was released by SIA in 2020. The backs of the tiles are beautifully embellished with golden batik patterns against a dark blue background, flaunting the brand’s signature prints.

As for the mahjong chips, they come in colours reminiscent of their air stewardess’ uniforms.

The pieces are kept neatly in a dark blue leather case, although sadly, the man failed to spot the mistake immediately upon opening it.

In case you are interested, SIA has also released another mahjong set in 2021, this time in Castleton green.

Both sets cost $388 excluding GST, making the total price $415.16.

Let’s hope the rest of the mahjong sets have the right pieces — I have faith they do.
