With the elections in Malaysia happening (yes, again) on 15 November this year, several Malaysian airlines will be rolling out discounts and more domestic flights in order to support the voter movement for the country’s 15th General Elections (15GE).
In particular, Malaysia Airlines released a statement on Thursday (20 October) which announced the start of the “Jom Balik Mengundi” (Let’s Go Back to Vote) campaign.
The campaign will begin on 20 October and end on 19 November, and will be in support of the travel from 11 to 27 November this year.
Apart from that, another 26 additional flights will be mounted during this period of time.
16 domestic services will also be upgraded to wide-body A330 aircraft in order to meet the increase in demand for tickets for multiple flight routes in areas such as Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
Malaysia Airlines also clarified that a 20% discount will be issued for all fare categories when travellers book their flights via malaysiaairlines.com.
Firefly Airlines to Add More Flights and Discounts
Similarly, Firefly Airlines will also be offering up to 70 additional flights for selected domestic routes from Subang and Penang.
These flights will take place from 17 to 20 November and discounts of up to 24% will be available.
From 20 to 24 October, the promotion will be available for travellers who book flights that take off from 1 November 2022 to 30 June 2023.
“MASwings customers travelling from Miri to Mulu, Sandakan to Lahad Datu, and Bintulu to Sibu will be able to book flights from RM135 for one-way all-in fares,” Firefly Airlines added.
Malaysia Aviation Group’s Response
In response to the airlines’ newest schemes, Malaysia Aviation Groups’ Chief Executive Officer Captain Izham Ismail mentioned how showing support for the GE15 as well as Malaysians who want to travel back to their hometown to vote was “part of their national commitment”.
“In view of this, all airlines under the Malaysia Aviation Group are pleased to mount additional capacities for certain sectors, where possible,” he added.
Apart from that, he emphasised how travellers should book their flights in advance in order to secure the best deals from Malaysia Airlines, Firefly or MASwings.

Flight Ticket Prices to be Monitored
In addition to the decrease in flight prices, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong announced that the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) will track flight ticket prices in the days leading up to the election.
This is to ensure that airlines do not increase their flight prices near the election period.
Apart from that, MAVCOM will also have the authority to step in if airlines hike up the price of their flight tickets unreasonably.
Previously, Malaysians took to social media to complain that the cost of flight tickets had increased exponentially after the Election Commission released the polling date for the upcoming elections.
