Can the cats ever catch a rest on our streets?
Besides stray dogs hunting down cats, another predator enters the ring. And it’s one of us.
Abused Five Cats
Barrie Lin Pengli, 30, faces charges for abusing five cats in Ang Mo Kio, between April 2020 and December 2021. Two of them were thrown down HDB blocks and subsequently stepped on the neck, effectively killing them for good.

His charges are under the Animals and Birds Act for the various types of animal cruelty inflicted.
Here’s a quick timeline of the events:
On 18 April 2020, Lin trapped a cat in a tiny waterproof bag at around 1:50 am, causing the cat to be in unbearable agony.
Three days later, at around 3:30 am, he reportedly hurled another cat from the 12th floor of Block 572, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, which consequently killed it.
On the same day, a third cat was reportedly trapped again by Lin at 4:30 am. The bag was small, waterproof, and had little ventilation.
On 15 May 2020, at around 3:30 am, Lin allegedly threw a fourth cat from the eighth floor. Later, according to the charge sheet, he stepped on the animal’s neck, sealing its death.
The last abuse was on 21 Dec 2021. The cat was picked up and slammed against the wall twice, at around 5:17 am.
Back to his chargers, Lin’s lawyer gave the court an update this Wednesday, stating that the Institute of Mental Health needed a report from a private psychiatrist before IMH can create a forensic report.

This will be ready by the end of February, while his client will be continuing with his therapy and starting a new job on the 15th.
Huh, do people still want to hire this guy?
For now, Lin is out on bail of $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in court again in March.

Same Crime Last Year
If you’re thinking this case sounds way too familiar, you’re right. Remember last year when a boy threw a cat from the 22nd floor?
The case stirred so much online outrage that a petition titled “Justice for the cat being thrown from 22nd floor of blk 186 Boon Lay Avenue” had almost 90,000 signatures.

The internet was overall, not forgiving. Many did not hold back when it came to criticizing the boy, such as calling him a monster, a murderer, or other remarks among those lines.
Fair enough, it’s scary to think a primary school kid is capable of carrying this degree of cruelty with no remorse.
But I don’t know what’s scarier; a grown man who should have known better, or a child?
