Some things in life are just inherently rare. It’s not everyday you can see a shooting star, find money on the street, or even strike gold.
Well, perhaps that only applies to some of us, because a man not only just struck literal gold, he got it for S$3 – from a night market in JB.
Here’s how he did it.
Gold in a Night Market
Netizen Mohamad Kitartech, uncovered his pot of gold at Pasar Karat (Karat Market) in Johor Bahru.
We’re not asking you to start heading there every weekend to purchase watch straps in bulk, but just saying, the market is only a short walk from the Causeway.
What he does next with the S$3 watch strap he purchased from the night market isn’t a process we’re familiar with, but in the case that you too start dabbling in this one day, here’s how you check for gold.
Kitartech brought the watch strap home and weighed it. It was 41.44g
Upon removing the brackets, he weighed the remainders of the watch strap again. This time, it weighed 28.5g.
Subsequently, he did an acid test – a simple test for one to determine how pure a piece of gold is.
All you’ll need for the test is just nitric acid and a black stone. Sounds simple enough.
It involved scratching the sample against a black stone to form a few lines, before applying nitric acid to the lines to see how much gold remains as compared with the metals that are dissolved in the acid.
It’s then just a test of your eye-power. The more gold you see, the more gold there is.
And clearly from Kitartech’s image, he definitely just found some pretty pure gold.

24.91 g of gold found in a S$3 watch strap
Kitartech had found 24.91g of 999 gold in the watch strap.
Yes, 999 gold. The type that Singaporean mothers always hint at wanting for their Mother’s Day gifts, birthday gifts or anniversary gifts.
999 gold is the purest form of gold, with a gold content of 99.9% not mixed with any other metal.
He also managed to find 3.7g of 750 gold, which is 75% pure.
Having posted his findings in the Emas Used Atau Terpakai Sahaja Facebook group which is filled with people dabbling in used gold, finding out the watch strap’s worth wasn’t too hard either.
A helpful netizen had taken the honour of calculating his windfall, valuing his haul at approximately S$2,275 (RM7,500).
And to think the watch strap only cost him S$3 (RM10).
Perhaps it is about time we all went on that JB trip…
