Uncle Charges His E-Bike at the HDB Lobby
It isn’t clear if the lock to the socket at the first floor of Block 122 on Yishun Street 11 had already been damaged, or deliberately pried open by the uncle himself, but currently that detail matters less than the fact that he took advantage of it.
According to the residents living nearby, an uncle would “steal the electricity” from the HDB lobby to charge his own e-bicycle.
This was reported by an anonymous person in a Facebook post on SG Road Vigilante on 19 March.
From the photo, it’s clear that a red e-bicycle was parked in front of the lift lobby, and someone was making use of the electrical socket. Upon closer inspection, the socket lid was covered and in functioning order, but the lid wasn’t locked, and it could be used after opening it.
Netizens’ Response
The netizens who saw the post commented that if no one takes care of it, it could be a dangerous fire hazard.
Others expressed that taking advantage of the electrical sockets in public areas is selfish, and they don’t condone this act of “stealing electricity”.
Some have even theorised that the e-bicycle might have lost power along the way, which was why the rider stopped temporarily to replenish the power supply.
To whoever that gave the last comment, you’re a really nice person to give the culprit the benefit of the doubt, because the truth of the matter is much worse.

Resident: Witnessed the Uncle Cooking Rice Downstairs
If blatantly charging his e-bicycle wasn’t enough, the middle-aged uncle has even used the electric socket to cook his rice too.
Should the uncle also be applauded for the fact that he dares to leave his e-bicycle there, unmanned and unlocked, when someone could just easily steal it?
The fact that the uncle would also cook his rice downstairs was revealed to the Chinese reporters of Shin Min Daily News by a resident who wished to remain unnamed.
He believes that the uncle was doing this because he didn’t want to use the electricity at home.
Well, yeah, it’s been clearly established that he’s a freeloader and a cheapskate.

Town Council: The Sockets Have Been Locked
When the Chinese reporters took a walk around Block 121, they noticed that it had six electrical sockets in total, and three of them weren’t locked.
In response to Shin Min Daily News’ inquiries, the Town Council responded that their personnel have already been alerted to the situation. When they arrived at the scene, they realised that the locks had been damaged, so they repaired them and proceeded to lock up the sockets, to prevent further abuse.
The spokesman also stated that the Town Council is currently cooperating with the local authorities to look for the culprit owner of the e-bicycle.
Surely he can’t be living that far away from Block 121 if he has the audacity to do such a thing.
Furthermore, the spokesperson issued a warning to everyone: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind the residents that they’re not allowed to use the electrical sockets in public areas unless they have been given permission to do so, since it might be of hindrance to the residents and become a safety hazard.”
