Beijing Man Faces Backlash for Leaking Deceased Star Kathy Chow’s Medical Records
The world recently bid farewell to the late Kathy Chow, leaving many in a state of mourning.
Yet, a 36-year-old man in Beijing chose to mourn her in a peculiar and almost intrusive manner.
Merely a day after her passing, he allegedly leaked Kathy Chow’s medical records to his friends.
The screenshot of these records, containing Chow’s personal details, treatment timeline, and other sensitive information, quickly went viral online on Tuesday night.
But what was his motive? Financial gain?
Surprisingly, no.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, his sole purpose was to boast to a friend on WeChat.
One might wonder if these records were authentic or just a ploy for attention.
However, the authenticity of the records was confirmed by the hospital, and the Beijing Health Commission announced an investigation into the leak.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on the mainland internet, with many expressing fury at the blatant disrespect for the privacy of the deceased.
Leaking someone’s private information is a serious intrusion, and this act becomes even more reprehensible when the individual is no longer alive.
A document from the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine revealed that Chow was found unresponsive on the floor around 10 am on Monday, and her death was announced the following day.
By Tuesday evening, her medical records from this hospital in Shunyi district were circulating across mainland social media platforms, including WeChat and Weibo.
The individuals involved, including the man named Fu and the hospital, may face severe penalties under the health administrative punishment rules of Beijing municipality, revised in January 2023.
In light of this incident, China’s top health authority issued a special action plan for patient safety (2023-25) in September.
This plan emphasises the significance of information security, outlining stringent measures against unauthorised sharing of patient diagnosis and treatment information.
The hospital faces the possibility of a warning and a fine ranging from 10,000 yuan ($1,394) to 50,000 yuan.
Moreover, doctors and nurses involved might face suspension or revocation of their medical licenses in severe cases.
The Shunyi district health authority has acknowledged the situation, and an investigation is currently in progress, as reported by Global Times.
Speculation about Kathy Chow’s death surfaced on the evening of 11 Dec when a Weibo post claimed the actress had passed away.
This news blindsided her fans, especially since she had been active on social media just three days earlier.
Although the post was later removed, it captured significant attention on Weibo, leading to widespread panic among her fans and quickly rising to the top of the hot search list.
Following her tragic demise, rumors continue to swirl, speculating about the mysterious illness that her family and studio have not disclosed.
Among these rumors was the suggestion of a possible lupus relapse, referencing Chow’s health hiatus in 1998 to recover from the disease.
