Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’ve boarded a bus and tapped your EZ-link against the reader only to find that you have no money in your card left?
You scramble to dig out some coins in your wallet while trying not to block the pathway of other passengers who are trying to board the bus as they “tsk” past you.
And just when you thought the embarrassment couldn’t get any worse, life proves you wrong once again as you realise that you don’t have enough coins for the bus fare. And by this time, everyone is just waiting for you to pay the fare so that the bus can keep moving.
You have two options, either to ask other passengers for some spare change, or leave the bus.
While some may think that it’s perfectly normal to ask other passengers for some spare change, others think that it is an utter embarrassment, like this man and his friend.
No Money For Bus Ride
One man took to Facebook to complain about his encounter with a “rude” bus driver who humiliated him because he and his friend didn’t have enough coins for the bus ride.
He goes on to explain in his post that his friend had just lost his wallet, so he had to pay the bus fare for his friend. While he had enough for himself, he was short of $0.40 for his friend’s fare.
He clarified with the bus driver that he did have a single $50 note with him, but obviously he wasn’t going to pay $50 for just a single bus ride since the bus’ farebox system was made in such a way that no change was to be given, so you’ll have to prepare the exact amount.
Instead of telling them to leave the bus so that others wouldn’t be held up, the bus driver suggested that they ask the other passengers on the bus for some spare change. For some reason, the man was highly offended upon hearing this.
“How Could He?”
He claimed that he was humiliated by the bus driver because how could he possibly beg for coins from others?
He told the driver sternly that he was going to file a complaint against him to SBS because of the utter humiliation that he suffered because of him, to which the bus driver simply said that he, too, will tell his superiors about this incident.
Feeling angry, the man decided to take a photo of the bus driver’s face and shame him on Facebook.
His post garnered over 1,000 comments, and contrary to what he thought, most of the comments are in support of the bus driver. Majority of comments were slamming him for being unreasonable.
He thought that netizens all over Singapore would understand his anger and his embarrassment over $0.40, but boy oh boy was he wrong.
Very wrong.
In all seriousness, we should always take some time to think through our actions before we make remarks about others.
My mom always told me, whenever you point your index finger at somebody, there are three fingers pointing back at you.
Hopefully this man and his friend both learn their lessons not to criticise others for simply doing their job, especially when they’re the ones at fault.
