We’re all no stranger to ladies night, and to be honest, some of us has taken it as part and parcel of life.

But not this man.

Enter Yip Shui-Kwong, a man who felt discriminated against

A Hong Kong man paid HKD 300 (approximately SGD 54) for entrance into the Legends Club, a karaoke disco located in Mongkok.

He noticed that ladies were paying cover fees, approximately S$21.60, to enjoy the same services as him. It was ladies night.

Feeling unhappy, he appealed to the Equal Opportunities Commission who brought Legend World Asia to the District Court for gender discrimination.

It was reported by the South China Morning Post that while complaints about ladies night have been around since the 1990s, this is the first time it was brought to court.

Judge ruled in favour of the Yip Shui-Kwong

Legend World Asia did not turn up for the hearing and District judge Ko King-Sau ruled in favour of Hong Kong’s equal opportunities watchdog. The respondent did not present any prior notice of absence.

He decided to milk it for all its worth

Sensing an opportunity, Yiu changed his case and seek compensation from Legend World Asia approximating S$9,000 for hurting his feelings. Yes, you read that right: hurting his feelings.

It was found that even after paying a higher choice and despite his “hurt feelings”, he had partied at the club for 4 hours, dancing, enjoying free drinks, singing karaoke and playing darts.

Judge Ko was quick to dismiss his appeal, citing that he was not a “true” victim of gender discrimination and that he has obtained what he bargained for in terms of enjoyment.

And all because his feelings were hurt.
