It hasn’t exactly been a good year for Samsung so far.
With their Galaxy Note 7’s recall, costing the company almost $1 billion and their stocks plummeting (by almost 7%), you’ll have thought that was the end. But no—now they could be potentially facing a lawsuit.
Jonathan Strobel from Boca Raton, Florida, was in Costco (think of it as Big Box in Singapore) on 9 September 2016, when his Galaxy Note 7 allegedly exploded in his front pants pocket. It caused a fire that burned through his pants, leading to a deep second-degree burn on his right thigh. The size of the burn was about the size of the Note 7.
When he tried to retrieve the phone from his pocket, he burned his left thumb, too. I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty nightmarish.
The incident happened a few days after Samsung has made the announcement to recall the phone. Mr Strobel either didn’t get the memo, wanted to do it later or probably didn’t expect his phone to be defective.
Samsung’s comment by their spokesperson was this: “We don’t comment on pending litigation. We are urging all Note 7 owners to power their device down and exchange it immediately.”
Mr Strobel is suing Samsung for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other alleged injuries, with the case being named Strobel v Samsung Electronics America Inc et al.
It’s almost a certainty that this case will be a case study for future law students.
