52YO Trapped Under SBS Bus for 15 Min After Accident in Toa Payoh

Always keep your eyes on the road.

As any motorist would tell you, taking your eyes off the road for just a moment could be the difference between life and death.

This is especially true if you’re driving a huge vehicle that could easily crush someone.

52YO Trapped Under SBS Bus for 15 Min After Accident in Toa Payoh

A 52-year-old man was trapped under a bus after a collision at the junction of Toa Payoh Lorong 6 and Toa Payoh East on Wednesday night (11 Nov).

The police were alerted to the incident at around 10.45pm.

According to The New Paper, eyewitnesses said the man was crossing the road with a shopping trolley and an SBS bus was turning right when the two collided.

A motorcyclist nearby heard the sound of the collision but didn’t know that an accident had taken place.

That is, until he saw a man trapped under the bus.

“The man looked like he was in pain,” the biker said.

Even without passengers, an SBS bus weighs over 15,000 kg. It’s unlikely that the full weight of the bus was on the man, as it would have crushed him.

The victim was freed 15 minutes later by Singapore Civil Defence Force officers and was taken to Tan Tock Seng hospital.

The 36-year-old bus driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt.

Investigations are ongoing.

Looked Pale When Pulled Out

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the front of the bus was damaged, and scraps of the vehicle which had broken off were scattered all over the road.

The victim reportedly looked pale when he was pulled out from under the bus, and an onlooker said the man had injuries on his hands and feet which looked serious.

In response to the incident, Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications at SBS Transit, said they are trying to reach out to the pedestrian.

“We have left our contact details with the hospital and hope the gentleman or his family members are able to get in touch with us so we can assist them as he recuperates. We are deeply sorry for the accident and are assisting the police in its investigations”, she said.

Similar Incident in 2018 Resulted in Death

A similar incident occurred in 2018 where a six-year-old boy was trapped under the rear wheel of an SMRT bus after an accident.

The boy sustained multiple injuries and was unconscious when he was freed and rushed to the hospital.

The young boy ended up dying from his injuries.

Hopefully, this man makes a full recovery.
