From beloved mala noodles to Samyang’s Fire Chicken noodles, we’ve all had our fair share of spicy challenges, being Singaporean where spicy food is generally loved.
They sometimes leave our mouths in hot pain to the point where it feels as if we can breathe fire like a dragon.
If you go to any mala stall, you can probably hear the enthusiastic “da la” or “big spicy” chants coming from adventurous people who just love the sensation of their mouth being torn apart.
They think the spicier it is, the more thrilling.
But as much as it all sounds like fun and games although your mouth is suffering, too much spice could actually be a one-way ticket to the ICU, and it’s not just because of the crazy painful diarrhoea you’ll wake up to the next morning.
Just ask this guy in Thailand, who decided to challenge his limits and take on the spiciest chilli in the world.
World’s Spiciest Chilli
The man had gone to a restaurant where he ordered basil pork rice and specially requested for the world’s hottest chilli to be added to his meal.
All because he wanted to try something new – the Carolina Reaper.
Even by the name of the chilli, it sounds devilish. *shudders*
Three Carolina Reapers were added to his rice, and like the extremely adventurous person he was, he made the decision of swallowing all three of them in one go, which also turned out to probably be the worst decision of his life.
Shortly after swallowing the chillis, his body couldn’t take it and reacted, causing his abdomen to feel super hot and painful like it was burning.
And Now, To The Hospital
He was unable to hold the pain and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment, allegedly retching the entire way, even though he couldn’t vomit anything out.
When he arrived, he was already sweating like crazy and could not even find the strength to stand.
It was so bad he had to be transported to the ICU on a stretcher.
The pain only subsided after an hour, after the doctors gave him some antacids and performed first aid on him to soothe his stomach.
The man got discharged thereafter but still needed to pay hospital fees of about 7,300 baht, or $315.51 SGD.
It’s sooo not worth it to end up paying an exorbitant fee and almost destroying your stomach by setting it on fire just because of one bad spicy decision!
Warning To Others
Regretting everything, the man reportedly told others that they should prepare themselves well and take precautionary measures before taking up a challenge like that.
The restaurant also said that they would warn other customers about the big dangers that little chilli holds but would not stop customers from adding it into their food if they wished.
Moral of the story: don’t anyhowly swallow three chillies in one go if you know you cannot stomach it.
The next time you feel like ordering da la for your mala noodles, or even trying that dreaded Carolina Reaper, just think first if it will just send you to the ICU or directly to the fiery pits of hell instead.
