As a young boy growing up, my mum used to teach me:
“Boy, you can punch that bully in the face. You can pee in the toilet and not flush it. But on no account, are you ever to take money from the sky.”
When I asked why, she simply stared at me right in the eyes and whispered: “You’ll know in due time.”
Cue twelve years later, and I read the headline:
Man Who Threw Money From The Sky in Hong Kong Facing Fine or Jail Time
And I looked at my Mum, and she smiled.
“You never know where the source comes from.”
And as I stared at her wonderingly, I thought.
Wow, Mum’s right for once. Is the moon blue today?
What happened?
On 15 December 2018, one of Hong Kong’s poorest neighbourhoods was submerged in chaos, as one very unlikely reason popped up:
There was money falling from the sky.
What’s more, they weren’t your usual small notes.
They were HK$100 (about SGD$18) notes.
But if you thought that the skies have finally taken pity on all the humans out there… you might be a little mistaken, for the God in this scenario happens to be a man.
A man who might be facing jail time for his actions.
Revelation
Following the incident, the ‘perpetrator’ had released a video on his Facebook page, expressing that he had been the one behind it.
“Does anyone here believe that money can fall from the sky?” he had asked in the video, before money began raining down onto a crowd that had gathered in the area. You can watch the video down below:

And for those who’re wondering, this is a more graphical depiction of his identity.
Although you’ve got to wonder what’s with the word on his supercar…
But it might have invited a bit more controversy than he intended
According to SCMP, the man, Wong Ching-kit, the owner of Epoch Cryptocurrency, was deemed responsible for the whole situation. And when questioned on his intentions, he simply answered:
“Don’t blame it on me, I also don’t know why money could fall from the sky.”
A really questionable answer, and honestly it just evokes memories of Amos Yee, which doesn’t really sit well with me. Or the cops for that matter.
Lawmaker Vincent Cheng has urged the police to investigate the matter thoroughly, as the source of the money might not be legal. He also expressed that the stunt was dangerous, as it had occurred at a busy place during the weekends.
At the current moment, the police are trying to locate Wong Ching-kit for assistance with the investigation. If he gets apprehended, he could face up to HK$5,000 (SGD$880) fine, as well as 12 months in prison for public nuisance.
Which kind of gets you wondering;
Is it worth it just to see whether the phrase “does the sky rain money” come true?
Man is Known As Coin Young Master
Cryptocurrency is the craze now, and the man is known in the online world as Coin Young Master. It’s, of course, unknown if cryptocurrency propelled him to his “wealth”.
According to other reports, a post has stated that he was the “superhero of justice..” and was “robbing the rich to help the poor”.
Well, now we know the superhero of justice drives a supercar, too #justsaying
