In an alternate universe, Marvel writers have long decided that using the same formula for every superhero movie wouldn’t do justice to their skillsets, and people might get bored of watching them.
But we’re not in that universe.
We’re in this universe, where giving fans more of the same still rakes in the cash.
A Billion-Dollar Franchise
In case you’re wondering just how much these Marvel Movies are making Disney, here are the stats to enlighten you.
In 2019, the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame brought in $2.798 Billion, making it the highest grossing film of the Marvel film franchise, while in the year prior, Avengers: Infinity War came in second at $2.048 Billion.
Our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man also made $1.901 Billion in the box office just last year for its third instalment of the series, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
And you know what they say: When something performs well, fund the sequel like your life depends on it.
Which is why, when Disney announced they were going to release two new Marvel Avengers films at Comic-Con, it was a win-win situation for both fans and producers.
Two Avengers Films to Hit Theatres in 2025
On 23 July, Saturday, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took to the stage and gave an hour-long presentation at the annual San Diego Comic-Con, conveying to fans what was to come.
To the delight of die-hard Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, he announced the upcoming release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and subsequently, Avengers: Secret Wars, both which are part of Phase 6 of the Avengers film series.
The two films will aim to emulate the same successful structure employed in Avengers: Endgame, by rounding off all storylines of preceding Marvel films. The Multiverse Saga explored in Phases 4, 5, and 6 will be concluded in these upcoming films, giving fans much to look forward to.
There’s a New Villain in Town
During the convention, it was also made clear the Kang the Conqueror of the Marvel Comic Books would be the ultimate supervillain of the Multiverse Saga, fighting against the mighty avengers in both upcoming movies.
When asked how Kang would compare to finger-snapping-existence-wiping Thanos, Fiege had this to say:
“What I love is that he’s totally different than Thanos. That he’s completely different, that it’s not just, ’How ‘bout… is there a bigger purple guy with a helmet.’ That’s not… you know, that’s not what Kang is. Kang is a very different type of villain and the fact that he is many, many different characters is what’s most exciting and most differentiates him.”
We’d imagine Thanos wouldn’t be to pleased to hear the “big purple guy with a helmet” comment, but oh well, he’s not around to be mad about it, for now.
Either way, if this villain, played by Johnathan Mayers is truly “many, many different characters” as Fiege says, Marvel fans should have a lot to look forward to.
Black Panther Also Makes a Comeback
Emotions ran high in the Convention Hall when Marvel concluded its presentation by releasing the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
This is the sequel to first, successful film, Black Panther, which won a Best Picture Oscar Nomination, the first of its kind as a comic book film.
It featured the late Chadwick Boseman as the film’s main hero, who had sadly passed on from a four-year battle with colon cancer in August 2020, at just age 43.
It was during Disney’s investors presentation that same year that Kevin Fiege announced they will not be recasting Chadwick in subsequent films to honour his legacy and his flawless portrayal of Black Panther.
“Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally,” Feige said. “His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. And it’s for that reason that we will not recast the character. However, to honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the king of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world and all the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.”
Exact Release Dates have been Announced
The Kang Dynasty will hit theatres on 2 May 2025, while Secret Wars will follow on 7 November, 2025 making it a markedly shorter wait than the year between Infinity War and Endgame.
The following posters have also been released:
Personally, it’s giving me “Sure you can copy my homework but just change it up a bit so it’s not obvious” vibes but hey, whatever works.
Just remember, if you work for Marvel: More of the same…more of the same…
Here’s an early reminder that if you’re a die-hard MCU fan, buy your advance sale tickets two weeks before unless you want to be dodging spoilers on Twitter left and right for awhile.
Black Panther is also set to release this year on 11 November 2022.
See you in theatres everywhere, folks.
