MSE Says There Won’t be Any Grace Period For Mask-Wearing Offences After Masks Become Optional Outdoors

Now that masks are optional outdoors, social responsibility is the name of the game

However, it’s kind of confusing—what constitutes the outdoors? Hawker centres are open-air, so is this form of alfresco dining technically outdoors?

Let’s break it down here.

The Next Badge Lady

Before, when Badge Lady belligerently rebelled against authority and defiantly remained maskless in Marina Bay Sands, it was clear that she knew what she was doing.

In other words, she was maskless both on and with purpose.

But you might not be. And yet you might still be breaking Safe Management Measures (SMMs).

So what now?

The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) does recognise this source of confusion.

According to queries from CNA, “some unfamiliarity” from the public will be expected, and so enforcement will be meted out in a “judicious manner”, even though a grace period will not be imposed.

However, this doesn’t mean that you can do whatever you want.

“There is no change in penalties against breaches of SMMs. Firm enforcement action will continue to be taken against individuals and owners/operators of premises who do not comply with prevailing SMMs. This could include fines or even prosecution in court for egregious cases,” said the spokesperson.

So, What Does Outdoors Mean?

You can take off your mask when you forge through parks, fields and nature trails. Open-air walkways, bridges and bus stops can also be mask-free. Finally, you can also breathe freely at HDB void decks, retail shop walkways and five-foot ways.

Other than that, though, you cannot take off your mask. Whether in HDB retail shops,  hawker centres, or on public transport, you’ll need to keep your mask on.
