This Taiwanese teacher taught her whole class a lesson on empathy, just from a simple pot of radish and meatball soup.

In a Facebook post, this teacher, known as Ms Shen, recounted a story about a pot of radish and meatball soup, and an underprivileged student in her class.

In the story, the class had meatball soup for lunch. Nearing the end, a student asked if everyone could have an extra meatball each. Ms Shen peered into the pot, and saw that there was just enough for everyone to have another.

However, she was aware that the under-privileged student packed the leftover soup home every day for dinner, and decided to do something.

She asked the boy to leave the classroom for an errand, before asking the rest of the class what kind of soup they usually had for dinner. Answers ranged from chicken, fish to pork ribs and many others.

She then asked if they knew what the boy had for dinner. She knew that everyone knew, as many of them helped him pack up the leftovers after lunch every day.

The answer, of course, was the leftover soup with no ingredients. The students were silent.

The teacher then told them they could have soup and the leftover ingredients as well, since their parents paid for the food. However, if they felt like they didn’t need to, they could consider leaving some for the boy to bring home.

As she finished, it seems the children couldn’t resist the soup, and all queued up for seconds.

After lunch, she went to check the pot, and discovered that all the meatballs had been left over. Nobody had taken any, choosing to leave them for the boy. The teacher watched as the boy began to pack up the leftovers, and discovered the meatballs.

He had a look of delight and wonder.

At the end of the day, the teacher gave out the biscuits she usually reserved for the student who could memorize the most words, to the whole class without saying why. Everyone knew why.

This heartwarming story drew great praise from netizens after it was put on Facebook, and many applauded the teacher’s efforts to guide and teach the students in doing the right thing. Many also praised the class for their maturity and compassion.

When young children in Taiwan can show so much compassion to their fellow man, can you say you do the same?
