FDW Put Medication into Milk for Baby So That She Can Rest

As a former baby, I can tell you that babies are not easy to care for.

They cry when they want to eat, sleep, poop, drink, play, and also when they can’t cry. But that’s why parents and babysitters need patience and empathy, as these poor little creatures can’t care for themselves nor express their needs.

Unfortunately, not everyone has this level of maturity, and some are willing to endanger a baby just to ease the burden of caring for them.

FDW Put Medication into Milk for Baby So That She Can Rest

Our story involves a 32-year-old Indonesian domestic helper, who, at the time of the offence, had been working for her employer’s family for around 14 months.

In addition to performing household choose, the helper also had to take care of the family’s 13-month-old infant.

On 5 Dec last year at about 8:30pm, the baby’s mother told the maid to feed the baby milk.

The maid went to the kitchen to get the baby’s bottle, which already contained 100ml of milk. Instead of feeding it to the baby, however, the helper went to her own cupboard and retrieved an Anarex tablet.

Commonly prescribed for flu, fever, and relief of muscular conditions, Anarex is known to cause drowsiness. The helper was aware that Anarex was a stupefying substance, as she had taken it herself before.

Despite this, she dropped the tablet into the bottle of milk and fed it to the infant, who drank 90ml of it. The baby fell asleep within 20 minutes and the maid brought the bottle to the kitchen to wash it.

Baby’s Cousin Spotted Substance

It was the infant’s cousin who first noticed something amiss. When the helper was in the kitchen with the bottle, the cousin spotted something blue and white in it and informed the baby’s mother.

To her horror, the mother found an Anarex tablet at the bottom of the bottle when she inspected it, and questioned her helper about the substance. Scared, the maid lied at first, but eventually came clean and apologised.

The baby’s mother then called the police.

Jailed for Six Months

It turns out that it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, as the helper had planned to lace the baby’s milk with Anarex earlier that evening so the baby would sleep deeply and wouldn’t require any attention.

For her offence, the 32-year-old was sentenced yesterday (2 Nov) to six months’ jail after pleading guilty to one count of causing hurt by means of a stupefying substance.

Fortunately, when the child was brought to the hospital a day after the incident, she was found to be in fair condition with stable vital signs.

In her defence, the helper said she only wanted the baby to rest so she could rest as well. She acknowledged that what she did was wrong, and asked for forgiveness.
