While we try and keep ourselves as safe as possible, it’s also important to ensure that those who cause harm to others are punished and that justice is served.
Today (10 March), two men were charged with raping a woman under the Tuas viaduct, which is situated along Pioneer Road, on 8 March.
The two men are Ahmed Rayhan, 30, and Alam Foysal, 36. According to court documents, both men are Bangladeshi.
Both of them each face one count of rape. If convicted, they face a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment. On top of that, they may be caned or fined as well.
What Exactly Happened
The victim, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity, did not know either of the men. They had apparently taken her to Pioneer Road, a road situated inside the Pioneer industrial estate before they assaulted her.
Court documents revealed that the men had apparently raped her for around two hours from 12.30 to 2.20 am under the Tuas viaduct, which is near Tuas West Road MRT Station.
The victim, who is 32 years old, was found along Pioneer Road. It was reported that she was injured but conscious when she was found.
The police were notified of the incident at around 7.25 am and found out that she had sustained several injuries on her head and body after they arrived at the scene.
“She was conveyed conscious to the hospital. Upon medical examination, her injuries suggested that she might have been sexually assaulted,” the police explained.
The Arrest
After a police report was lodged, both men were identified and arrested within 12 hours.
Both Rayhan and Foysal were tracked down by the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department, Public Transport Security Command and Jurong Police Division through extensive ground inquiries as well as footage from police cameras and closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs).
The men attended their court hearing via video-link, and a Bengali interpreter was present to read the charges out to the pair.
District Judge Terence Tay ordered both men to be remanded for a week at Central Police Division before they return to court later this month on 17 March.

The police highlighted through a news release that they “will spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice”.
“Members of the public are advised to report cases of sexual assault to the police so that offenders can be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law to prevent them from causing further harm to other persons,” they mentioned.
