On Thursday (21 Apr), former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was caught on video, pummelling another passenger on board a plane at the San Francisco International Airport.

The video shows Tyson leaning over the back of his seat as repeatedly punched an unidentified man in the head, drawing blood in the process.

The footage was first shared by TMZ Sports, with an image of the victim’s bleeding and pouting face attached.

Allegedly, the incident took place on a JetBlue plane heading for Florida.

Saw The Punch Coming a Mile Away

According to another passenger on flight by the name of Sarah Burchfield, she recalls seeing the man that Mike Tyson punched at the airport bar earlier. He had drawn her attention because he had been loud and quarrelsome.

In an interview with SFGate, she said: “When I boarded the flight, I thought, ‘Oh, no, that drunk guy is on our flight.”

Burchfield also corroborates the fact that Mike Tyson had been seated in the first-class section, with the drunk victim one seat behind him. When she was passing them by, she saw them interacting, only for the fight to break out a while later, loud enough that she could hear it from her position.

Prior to the beat-down, the drunk man could be seen on video standing over Tyson’s seat, gesticulating with his arms wildly and talking loudly as the former boxer remained reticent in his seat.

Another witness on board told TMZ reporters that Tyson had been nice to the passengers seated around him, even taking a selfie with his victim when asked. Afterwards, Tyson had exercised great patience with the belligerent man as he continued to chatter away excitedly.

At some point, Tyson told his would-be victim that he had enough, and that he should “chill”, but his words unfortunately fell on deaf ears.

Tyson must have snapped soon after, which led to the violent scene that was captured on camera.

Tyson is wrong for resorting to violence, but considering the various witness testimonies, you can’t say the drunk man didn’t have it coming.

Police Involvement in the Case

The San Francisco Police are currently investigating the case.

The legal representatives for Tyson wrote to The Associated Press, explaining, “Unfortunately, Mr Tyson had an incident on flight with an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat.”

Since the investigations are still ongoing, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office declared that they won’t be releasing any information yet because it was an active investigation.

However, they did confirm that the two subjects were detained, and that they have a copy of the video.

The police also mentioned that one subject was treated at the scene for his non-life-threatening injuries. To make matters worse, that particular subject has provided little to no details regarding the incident and has actively refused to cooperate with the police investigation.

Presently, both subjects have been released from police custody as the investigation continues.

Mike Tyson’s History

Judging from how the victim had been bleeding in the head, it’s evident that Tyson didn’t pull his punches, nor has he lost his touch.

Tyson was crowned the youngest heavyweight champion in history in 1987 at the age of 20. During his career, he had 50 wins, 44 of them by knockouts.

The 55-year-old former boxer has long retired, and now works as an actor, podcaster, and a cannabis entrepreneur.

Didn’t see the last business venture coming, but okay.

Reportedly, he was in San Francisco for the annual 420 cannabis festival at Golden Gate Park, where he was advertising his cannabis brand Tyson 2.0.

Besides this physical altercation, Tyson served three years in prison after being convicted of rape in the 1990s, though he still insists that he was innocent for that case.

He was also briefly banned from boxing when he infamously bit off Holyfield’s ear during a fight in 1997.
