#MovieMonday: 1917: Keeps You Invested Till The Very End

Let’s be honest. I’m not a war movie kinda person.

I don’t stroll into a movie theatre and tell my fiance, “Hey babe, let’s watch people blow each other up for two hours.”

But this movie, this was different. And I only know a couple of war movies that have had such a profound impact on me, such as Hacksaw Ridge and Saving Private Ryan.

#MovieMonday: 1917: Comparable To Hacksaw Ridge

Here’s the synopsis:

The film is based in part on an account told to Mendes by the producer (Sam Mendes’) paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes. It chronicles the story of two young British soldiers during World War I in the spring of 1917 who were given a mission to deliver a message. It warns of an ambush during a skirmish soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich.

And here’s the trailer:

Let’s be honest, war is on everyone’s mind right now, at least for most of us. The tension between countries are rife so it’s no wonder, hence watching a war movie seemed apt for some reason.

But what about the reviews?

Well, critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 90% while normal people like us also gave it a 90%.

The general consensus is that people love it, so you probably will too.

Tension

Like any movie that involves bombs and guns, tension is palpable. It’s worsened because of the very plot of this movie, which is to deliver a message before an ambush can occur.

If you’re someone who enjoys tension and suspense, drop everything and head to the nearest movie theatre right now because this is the movie for you.

It really keeps you invested until the very end.

Stunning Cinematics

Full disclosure: I am not a film student. I don’t know anything about cameras or films, except that one button to press that helps you take a photo.

But many have observed that the movie is filmed in a way that makes it seem and feel like one continuous take. The result is a very smooth and soothing cinematic experience.

The camera seamlessly follows the actors through different scenes, and trust me, when you’re watching a tense movie this is a godsend.

My only gripe, as with most war movies is that the beginning can be a little dry and boring. My advice is to stick through with it and give it a chance because it will pick up.

Is it as good as Saving Private Ryan? I would say no. But it is definitely a good watch.
