MRT Station Closures Aren’t Just Affect You & Me. It’s Affecting Businesses Around Them, Too

News about MRT closures are all the rage now.

There’s always that couple of friends or colleagues around you who has no idea about the closures. As such, it’s good to have a chart or article regarding the upcoming MRT closures and altered opening hours!

We may whine and complain about the closures, but hey, at least we have alternatives. No MRT? Take a bus (Even though it might very well take 30 minutes).

Better yet, stay at home and watch YouTube or something. It’s a Sunday after all.

However, there exist those who have no alternatives at all.

It’s reported that the sales of some businesses, especially those within the MRT stations, have dipped by approximately 50% due to the recent MRT station closures.

“Sales this weekend is better than last weekend. Last week was so quiet,” said Mr Chen Chon Guan, the overseer of three eateries at Redhill MRT station.

“There are less people passing through as the station is closed. We have been preparing less food to sell.”

“Business has to open as usual as we still have to pay for the workers. There’s no such thing as closing shop just because the MRT station is not operating.”

The business fell by 50% on 17 Dec, which was more than the 20% Mr Chen had anticipated.

Man, a 50% drop is really significant. What’s more, I’m fairly certain that the earlier closing and later opening hours will definitely impact the businesses in the area.

As much as we understand that the shortened operating hours will allow for engineering work to be carried out efficiently, the businesses in the area end up suffering the adverse effects.

What’s more, the business owners and workers for these shops are affected by the closure as well.

Man, talk about drawing the short end of the stick. So, if you’re thinking of complaining about the MRT closure, do remember that there are people out there taking the brunt of the load!

However, it’s worth noting that shopping malls were not as badly affected by the MRT closures. After all, it’s the holiday season! We still have to do our Christmas and new year shopping, right?

This could perhaps explain why there was a severe traffic jam around the Jurong area a week back. The cluster of malls around Juron east like JEM, JCube and IMM are still attracting customers due to their convenience and relatively large selection.

That’s it from me for now. As always, do remember to check the train schedules before leaving your house these days!
