M’sia Man Used ‘Lockdown’ Period to Revamp His Bedroom into IKEA-Style Showroom

People are bored AF at the moment.

With everyone stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, people are coming up with new ways to entertain themselves indoors.

There’s always Netflix, you say, but after binging shows for weeks on end, your brain has turned to soup and you have turned into an actual potato.

That’s why one Malaysian man took this opportunity to do something he always wanted to: make his bedroom look like the inside of a Swedish mall.

As you know, Malaysia imposed a lockdown in March and extended it twice to curb the spread of Covid-19.

While many others were lying in bed fantasising about KTV sessions they’ll have after their lockdown, one Malaysian man turned his bedroom into an IKEA-worthy showroom during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Twitter user @FiqSaid posted images of the makeover online, and to call it extreme would be an understatement.

Saved Up For Five Years

According to SAYS, the 34-year-old man never had the time or money to redecorate his room, and has been sleeping on a mattress for the past five years.

So, it’s not like he was a bored rich man who redecorated his room on a whim because he was bored; he’s been saving up for this renovation for a long time.

“I saved for five years to get all of that IKEA furniture. It was not a ‘one night money drop’ thing,” he told SAYS.

While he spent 28 of his days in quarantine working on this redecoration, most of the large furniture such as the loft bed and wardrobes were already installed by IKEA just before the government announced the MCO.

But since he was stuck at home like everyone else during the lockdown, he decided to complete the makeover himself.

So, he ordered the smaller pieces of furniture and put them together in the first week.

He then started scraping the old paint of his walls, ceilings, and window grilles before giving them a fresh coat of white paint.

The HR executive said he also assembled and drilled the shelves, as well as fixed the room lighting and wiring all by himself.

How Much He Spent

You probably only have one question on your mind right now: how much did this beautiful transformation cost?

Well, many other Twitter users had the same query, and fortunately, the man answered it.

Here’s a list of all the furniture that he had bought from IKEA and their prices:

– A Stora loft bed (RM1,299)
– A Malvik foam mattress (RM699)
– A three-door Songesand wardrobe (RM999)
– A Linnmon/Adils table (RM399)
– A Skalberg/Sporren swivel chair (RM129)
– Two Trofast storage organisers (RM146 each)
– Two two-door Aneboda wardrobes of which he couldn’t remember the price because he bought them five years ago.

In total, taking into account the paint and the other small pieces of furniture he later added, the man spent about RM5,000 (S$1626) to makeover his room.

Not too bad, right? It’s certainly worth the money and effort.

He later said that you don’t actually need IKEA furniture for your room to look pretty; you just need to be hardworking.
