Most of us have probably been disturbed by some sort of noise coming from our neighbours.

Sudden shouts in the middle of the night? Check.

Hammering or drilling noises? Check.

Random sound of marbles dropping, or furniture being dragged? Check.

Despite everything, the majority of us probably don’t do anything other than groan in annoyance in the privacy of our own homes.

For three households in Jurong West, however, the mysterious noise disturbing them has caused a huge conflict—to the point of involving the authorities.

Three Households All Blame Each Other For Noise

The incident took place in Block 824 of a HDB flat along Jurong West Street 81. The three households involved in the dispute live on the 5th, 6th and 7th floors.

On Wednesday (26 May), one of the male tenants of the unit on the 6th floor uploaded two videos on Facebook. He claimed that the neighbour downstairs was drilling the ceiling, and that the noise could be heard from his unit.

The male tenant, who did not want to be named, had actually been acting in response to complaints from other neighbours about him. As it turns out, the other neighbours had also been affected by the same noise.

Thinking it was coming from the male tenant’s unit, their complaints had actually resulted in people from the town council often at the door when they were notified of the issue.

In order to prove his innocence, he had decided to take the matter online.

Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, the tenant expressed that he and the other tenants were often out for work during the day. He said that he could not understand why the neighbours blamed him for the noise.

However, the households on the 5th and 7th floors told a different story. They told reporters that they have been disturbed by percussion and drilling noises since April last year.

Since their attempts to find and negotiate with the household from the 6th-floor unit had failed, they thus hoped that the relevant authorities would intervene.

39-years-old Mr Zhuang, who lived on the 7th floor, said that when he went downstairs to investigate, he found wooden slats outside the door of the 6th-floor unit. He was greeted by a male resident who answered the door with a small knife.

Woah, that suddenly took a really dark turn.

Whatever horror story you’re imagining, don’t worry—nothing of that sort happened.

“When I requested politely for him to lower his volume, he had agreed and said ok then. However, I still heard noise almost every morning and night after that,” said Mr Zhuang.

60-years-old Mrs Chen, a resident on the 5th floor, added that the noise disturbance worsened over the past year. “We’ve contacted the owner of the unit, but there’s been no change in the situation,” said Mrs Chen.

The neighbours also suspected that one of the tenants within the 6th-floor unit might have been conducting some heavy repair works, leading to the long-term noise disturbance.

Neighbours All Have Videos to Prove That the Other Was to Blame

The tenants on the 6th floor insisted that they were not the cause of the noise. They even expressed that to prove their innocence, they had already installed four 24-hour CCTV cameras within the unit. They also planned to purchase a sound detector for recording purposes.

However, the neighbours on the 5th and 7th floor have also said that they had recorded about 40 videos. In these videos, they claimed that percussion and other noises could be heard coming from the unit on the 6th floor.

Round and round we go, in circles.

When reporters from Lianhe Zaobao visited last night, they did not hear any noise.

Dispute Escalated When Neighbour Stepped Into House Without Mask

The 6th-floor household had also uploaded a CCTV recording of a visit from a neighbour who lived on the 5th floor.

In the video, a female resident can be seen walking up to their door, likely to discuss the noise issue.

At that time, the door of the 6th-floor unit was open. When nobody answered the door, the woman in the video can be seen stepping into the unit and looking around. The woman was also not wearing a mask.

The male tenant who uploaded the video said that he had been sleeping in his room when the incident happened, and that there had been a worker in the kitchen doing repair works.

“I did not think that the volume was loud. When this female resident visited, she also did not wear a mask, and so I called the police afterwards.”

The female resident admitted that after hearing the noise, she had been so anxious to find the neighbour for talks that she had forgotten to wear her mask. However, she also expressed that she did not have the intention of trespassing into her neighbour’s unit.

She added that while she had not seen the uploaded video, her daughter felt that it was immoral for the other party to do so.

The Facebook post and uploaded videos have since been deleted.

Perhaps, the noise really did not come from any of the three households. I mean, give them the benefit of the doubt: I don’t think anyone would forsake sleep just to play some drums or drill something.

Chances are, you’ve probably heard weird noises at night that may or may not have been from your neighbours.
