Over time, posts on social media can sketch out a person’s life, albeit often in an inaccurate manner.
One look through my TikTok account, for example, would make you believe that I spent all my time either dancing with cats or eating Chicken Rice, which is, well, true, but you get the point.
But if you’re a famous person and you post pictures online, you can expect netizens to make all sorts of assumptions about how you spend your time.
Especially when you’ve been sentenced to imprisonment and are out on a stay of execution.
Najib Responded to Netizens Who Complained That He Met Up With S’porean Billionaire in S’pore
It all started with a Facebook post.
A Facebook page by the name of Zunar Cartoonist Fan Club had shared a picture of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak with Sam Goi, also known as the Popiah King, here in Singapore.
One picture showed the pair standing next to a Rolls Royce, while the other showed both in golfing attire, presumably during a round of golf.
“Meeting his grandson in Singapore?” the caption said.
As netizens noted, Najib had been granted a temporary release of his passport in October by Malaysia’s Court of Appeal just so he could travel to Singapore to meet his grandson.
Unless there was a memo and a miracle of time that we all missed, Mr Goi is clearly not Najib’s grandson; he is a Singaporean billionaire who ranked 23rd in Forbes’ 2021 Singapore’s 50 Richest, known for his popiah skin business Tee Yih Jia.
He currently has a net worth of around S$2.3 billion.

This is why netizens were angered by the photos with Goi, as they felt that Najib had not been entirely truthful when giving his reason for the trip to Singapore.
True to form, Najib responded in a Facebook post of his own last Sunday (12 Dec).
“Is this also an issue? Must I be with my grandchild 24/7 during the six days I am in Singapore?” he said.
He explained that he had met Mr Goi to discuss business: “He was a fan of my economic and development policies when I was prime minister and yes, that Rolls Royce belongs to him.
“When we met, he asked a lot for my opinion on the direction of development and economy of the country because he wanted to invest more in Malaysia,” he added.
Court Upholds Sentence
Just a few days earlier, Malaysia’s Court of Appeal dismissed Najib’s appeal on seven charges relating to the 1MDB case.
Najib is facing 42 counts of corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering, across five court cases in total, but was found guilty of seven of them last year, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
He had been granted a stay of execution, which allowed him to stay out of prison, pending his appeal to the Federal Court.
