For nature lovers in Singapore, visiting spots such as Coney Island, Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve and Chek Jawa are some of the places where you can get to enjoy being in natural surroundings.

If you think there are no new places for you to explore and indulge in your adventurous spirit, you’re wrong. The good news is that you will have a new place to visit in the near future. Or should we say, one of the “older” nature spots in Singapore is about to get a makeover and become a place of interest once more.

NParks has announced plans to restore the northern shorelines of Pulau Ubin and to build a coastal boardwalk that extends into the sea in the North of Pulau Ubin so visitors can enjoy an Instagram-worthy view of the coastal forest and sea. Sounds like a great place for a date? We think so too!

The restoration of the Pulau Ubin shoreline is parts of a plan to protect the biodiversity of Pulau Ubin which includes the mangrove swamp surrounding the island.

Pulau Ubin is also home to critically endangered species that are unique to its shore such as the Oriental Small-clawed otter. Otter dens have been designed in an effort to observe and study these creatures.

Once the restoration efforts by NParks are complete, you can get to enjoy views of the mangrove swamps and the coast around Pulau Ubin.

On top of that, Noordin and Mamam beach will see an extension to their shorelines, allowing them to be used for recreational uses.

Besides the works along the shores of Pulau Ubin, work is also underway to reintroduce as many as 800 breeds of orchid around the island as part of the NParks Orchid Conservation Programme.

With such exciting plans in the future. I’m sure you are excited about the new coastal boardwalk and can’t wait for it to be open to the public but there’s a catch: The restoration is slated to begin in 2017, after which building of the boardwalk will commence.
