Everything About This Year’s NDP & Its Fun Pack Simplified For You

This year’s National Day Parade (NDP) is going to be a little different.

With the coronavirus keeping everyone in their homes, and with large gatherings banned, how exactly are you supposed to have a National Day Parade if no one can attend it?

Well, you could bring it into each and every home across the country.

Everything About This Year’s NDP

Even though a floating platform celebration was initially planned, this year’s NDP will focus on allowing Singaporeans to celebrate in their homes.

Instead of watching other people on television get excited by a fighter pilot doing some crazy things in the air, Singaporeans who tune in to this year’s NDP will be able to participate in various virtual and home activities.

This includes an NDP-themed workout and a family cooking activity.

There won’t be any live spectators, and there’ll only be a fraction of the number of the performers we had last year.

Many parade segments will be moved to different parts of the country and streamed live over TV as well as online platforms.

This means that segments like the fighter jet aerial display and state flag fly-past will take place in different locations.

Singapore’s 55th birthday celebration will begin with a nationwide broadcast of the Prime Minister’s National Day Message and a parade at the Padang reviewed by the President.

Then, flag-raising ceremonies will take place across Singapore during the singing of the National Anthem.

And of course, because it’s 2020, there’ll be a few segments dedicated to our fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

Evening Show at Buona Vista

An evening show at The Star Performing Arts Centre in Buona Vista will feature films and small-group performances by Singaporeans.

Instead of a mass performance, these intimate shows are meant to evoke a feeling of warmth and togetherness.

That’s something we’re desperately missing at the moment.

According to The Straits Times, the show will tell “inspirational and uplifting” stories during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It will also pay tribute to our heroic frontline workers.

But since no National Day Parade is complete without fireworks, the show will end with a nationwide anthem and pledge, with majestic fireworks being set off at more than 10 different locations across Singapore.

But that’s not all.

Funpacks for Everyone

Funpacks, which are usually given to parade attendees, will be handed out to each Singaporean and permanent resident household this year.

Last year’s funpack included items like reusable bamboo drinking straws, a discount booklet, and a luggage tag, to name a few.

We might get straws and booklets again, but we certainly won’t be getting any luggage tags, unless the authorities want to remind us about our depressing inability to travel.

This year, the funpack was designed by aspiring artists with disabilities and Primary 5 pupils.

According to The Straits Times, it has items like pledge cards, handheld flags, and torch filters to encourage Singaporeans to participate in the show.

If you want to join in the NDP 2020 campaign, you can upload videos, photographs, and well-wishes on social media with the hashtag #TogetherStrongerSG and #NDP2020.

You can also tag the official NDP social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram (@NDPeeps).

You may not always have been enthusiastic about National Day celebrations in the past, but this year’s parade is an opportunity for Singaporeans to come together to foster a sense of togetherness and pay tribute to those who are combating the disease every day.

And you can do it at home.
