Netizens Are Debating Whether This Chicken Rice That Costs $9 in Suntec City is Reasonable

When food prices rise, so do people’s tempers.

This is especially when the price of the food does not warrant a high price tag.

For local delights such as chicken rice, people may expect to pay about $4 or $5 for a good meal of rice, chicken and perhaps a bowl of soup if you dine in.

But what if you pay almost double that price for the same quantity of food?

Some netizens are buzzing about whether charging $9 for a plate of chicken rice is reasonable.

Man Charged $9 for Chicken Rice at Suntec B1 Food Court

Earlier this week, a Reddit user by the moniker u/Randomrubberduck took to the discussion site to post about their expensive chicken rice.

The post’s caption indicated that the steamed chicken rice plate cost a whopping $9.

The Redditor had purchased the food from “Suntec B1 food court”.

There is also a bowl of soup and two packets of chilli.

With this typical serving of chicken rice, is it worth $9, which is more expensive than you would expect?

Perhaps as the Redditor mentioned, inflation is hitting hard.

Netizens Discuss if This Price Is Reasonable

The consensus seems to be that $9 per plate of chicken rice is exorbitant.

In the comments section of the thread, some netizens identified the food court as Food Republic and expressed their dissatisfaction with the chain.

One netizen expressed that they “condemned the chain as a whole” due to its high prices not commensurate with the food quality.

The netizen said people would feel “cheated” if they ate there.

Another netizen said that $6 was the maximum they would pay, a good $3 less than the Redditor paid.

However, there was also a different perspective in the comment section.

One netizen pointed out that the prices were listed at the stall, and the Redditor would have been aware of the cost before ordering.

Also, the portion ordered was the medium portion at $9. A regular portion would probably have cost less.

Well, if it is any consolidation to the Redditor, at least they got a better deal than this individual by the moniker of JYJ.

Stomp reported that JYJ had paid $7 for nasi padang consisting of only white rice, some gravy and a fried chicken piece at Far East Plaza’s Mansor D’Cafe.

The Redditor got a better deal due to the vast difference in food quantity.

And at least there was transparent pricing at the chicken rice stall instead of race-based pricing, which JYJ alluded to in their submission to Stomp.
