New MacBook Pro Tries to be Reinvent the Wheel with No USB Port at a Ridiculous Price

It seems like everything Apple touches turns into gold so that they can sell it at a ridiculous price.

Yesterday, Apple announced its fourth-generation MacBook Pro, a well-deserved upgrade after four years of hiatus, which is also the tenth-year anniversary of their first MacBook Pro.

Popular among designers, the MacBook Pro has always been one of Apple’s proudest products, but this time, they might have gone way too far with their approach.

To put it simply, Forbes say it best in their headline for this new MacBook Pro: “Apple Kills The Best MacBook Pro In The World.” Well, sort of.

First, let’s talk about the price. The new MacBook Pro is priced at $3,388 for cheapest 15-inch model, while the old one is at $2,788. Okay, granted that it’s new so it’s reasonable for it to cost more, but here’s the thing: it doesn’t have much improvement.

Other than it being thinner by 0.1 inch, a slighter better processor, one more hour of battery life, some fancy “touch bar” that allows you to touch instead of click your mouse to operate the computer (isn’t that familiar?) and 0.21kg lighter, you’ve the same old model.

And here’s the thing: in the new MacBook Pro, Apple removed a few most important ports that we use regularly: the HDMI port (how are we going to make presentations now?), the SDXC card slot (good luck, photographers) and most importantly, the USB ports (okay, this isn’t a damn computer).

What it has is an additional four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, which they call it “the most powerful and versatile port ever” (ah, that adjective-filled description). And what this means is that you’ve got to buy many adaptors in order to use your thumbdrive, your SD card or even that cool wireless mouse you’ve just bought from POPULAR Bookstore.

And oh, before you go apeshit and decide to let your dog chew the money you’ve saved up to buy the new MacBook Pro, here’s one saviour: the headphone jack is still there. Guess the MacBook team didn’t get the memo from the iPhone team.

It makes it wonder what’s next for their iPad—maybe they’ll remove the charging port and force encourage you to charge wirelessly…by buying a wireless charger?

At least that might decrease the change of the phone catching fire, no?
