If there’s one way to describe the state of the Taiwanese entertainment industry right now, it’s in shambles.
Firstly, there was the exposé of host Mickey Huang and his sexual harassment towards women and underage girls.
Then, with the rapid rise in the #MeToo movement in Taiwan, television presenter NONO was brought into the conversation as well.
Other Taiwanese celebrities like Aaron Yan also found themselves in the hot seat after former victims spoke up about their sexual assault.
And now, after Huang’s self-mutilation attempt and apologies by other celebrities, NONO emerged with the most shocking announcement of all:
That he’s going to be quitting showbiz.
Victim Accused NONO of Sexual Harassment When She Was a Guest On a Variety Show
On Monday (19 June), NONO’s victim, Amber Chang, uploaded a post on Facebook to talk about her experience of being sexually harassed by NONO.
NONO, whose real name is Chen Hsuan-yu, had allegedly asked Chang for her phone number and offered to drive her home.
The pair had gotten to know each other as Chang was a regular guest on a variety show.
Even though she did not name NONO in her post, she revealed clues like him being a celebrity who ran a chicken cutlet business.
I mean, not all celebrities run chicken cutlet businesses.
Chang had initially agreed to let NONO drive her home, but he started to get touchy while in the car.
After hugging her and pulling her into the backseat of the car, he started to kiss her.
He also tried to remove her undergarments that were under her skirt.
Chang then “begged him to stop”, prompting him to brush his hand across her thigh one last time and try to joke about what he had just done to her.
After the incident, Chang said that the celebrity failed to apologise and even told Chang she would “get used to it” in the future.
NONO to Quit Showbiz After Initially Saying He Had No Impression of His Victim
And just yesterday (21 June), two days after the accusations were posted, NONO uploaded a post on his Facebook announcing that he will be halting all of his showbiz-related work from now on.
He added that he would be taking time to “sincerely and deeply reflect” on his actions.
Well, that’s definitely a completely different announcement from his initial response.
Initially, he had said that he “had no impression” of Chang and the incident she had described.
He even said that he could not admit his mistakes if he could not even remember the incident.
Yup, maybe this is my sign to conveniently forget all the things I’ve done wrong in my life because, hey, you can’t admit your mistakes if you can’t remember, right?
Victim Held a Press Conference to Reveal that Around 20 Women Have Been Sexually Harassed by NONO
On the same day (21 June) in the morning, Chang was present at a press conference to clarify NONO’s actions towards her.
Apart from talking about her traumatic experience, Chang also revealed that she has since received messages from over 20 netizens claiming that they were all sexually harassed by NONO.
At least two of them were sexually assaulted by him as well.
The identities of these netizens when they were harassed include 15-year-old girls, interns and university students.
They were harassed and/or assaulted by NONO in places like public toilets, parks, cars and even in the music room in NONO’s house.
