Hygiene lapses in food places at schools here in Singapore aren’t anything new.

You have outsourced caterers causing food poisoning.

Multiple times.

And now, you have another school, this time a local university, who has had two food places suspended.

National Technological University

Local universities are like mini-towns on their own.

They have huge campuses, and food options aren’t limited to just school canteens.

There are huge chains like Starbucks, McDonald’s, KFC and more. In other words, if there was ever a zombie outbreak in Singapore, these schools will probably be occupied by gangs like those in The Walking Dead.

And NTU isn’t any different.

But if you’re a student studying at NTU, you’d probably notice that two food places in popular dining district, North Spine Plaza, were suddenly closed.

Long John Silver’s

Yesterday, we were just writing about LJS and their disappointing new addition to their menu: the Japanese Curry.

And today, we’re writing about NTU Long John Silver’s getting suspended by the Singapore Food Authority (SFA).

According to reports, the restaurant received a total of 12 demerit points:

  • Six for selling food containing foreign matter
  • And another six for failing to register a food handler with the agency

The restaurant will be closed until 17 June 2019.

The House Steamboat Restaurant

The House Steamboat Restaurant received a total of 12 demerit points too:

  • Six for preparing food on the floor of its restaurant
  • And another six for failing to register a food handler with the agency

The restaurant is suspended from 10 June to 23 June 2019.

So if you love going to these two places for food, just note that they’ll only be open for business on 17 June (Long John Silver’s) and 23 June (The House Steamboat).

NTU Responds

An NTU spokesperson said that the school has issued “stern” written warnings to the two restaurants.

He asserted that the two restaurants are told to comply with corrective actions prescribed by the SFA.

If not, they’ll kick them out of school.

SFA officers will continue conducting spot checks to ensure that hygiene practices and food safety are adequate.

Not The First Time

Before the food authority changed from NEA to SFA, other food stalls at NTU North Spine Plaza had been suspended before.

Back in May 2018, an international food stall at North Spine Food Court was suspended for two weeks and fined $1000 for rodent and cockroach infestation.

A month later, the cai png stall at canteen 13 was also slapped with a two-week suspension due to rodent issues.
