Do you know what’s annoying?

When you meet someone – a friend or date – who’s so sweet and caring at the start of a relationship that you put all your faith and trust in them with reckless abandon without even getting to know them first.

Then, a year later, they’re stealing your face masks, gossiping about you, and smashing your laptop on the floor after an argument over bubble tea.

Reader Bao: This seems oddly specific

I, uh, read a lot.

Essentially, after peeling back their layers, you discovered their rotten core.

Some residents here experienced the same thing here recently with a fruit, except it’s usually much sweeter and juicier than any human could be.

NTUC Fairprice Pineapples from Taiwan Removed due to Rotten Cores

Some pineapples here have left a sour taste in netizens’ mouths.

Over the last few days, netizens have been sharing pictures of pineapples with dark brown cores.

The ‘black-hearted’ pineapples drew media attention after Taiwanese media personality Huang Weihan talked about the recent deluge of poor quality pineapples in a livestream on Tuesday (30 March).

He even shared images of the pineapples with darkened cores sent to him by followers in Singapore.

“Sad to see that the quality of pineapples exported to Singapore this year seems to be really much worse than previous years,” he wrote.

Pineapple Black Rot

As for what’s causing these cores to darken, it’s probably pineapple black rot, or base rot, a disease caused by a plant pathogen.

The same pathogen also causes disease in a variety of other tropical plants such as banana, coconut, and sugarcane making it a somewhat dangerous pathogen.

Pineapple black rot is reportedly the most common and well-known post-harvest disease of the pineapple fruit and is responsible for serious losses in the fresh pineapple fruit world industry.
