Every now and then, you’ll probably hear someone saying something like this around your office.
“Walau eh, boss is working me to death sia!”
More often than not, it’s just a disgruntled worker complaining about his boss.
Of course, I’m not denying that there are horrible management personnel out there with their hearts (if they even have one) set on exploiting the workers.
Just recently, a case of severe overworking has caught the attention of netizens all over Taiwan. A nurse has been found dead after allegedly overworking for 13 days straight.
The 38 year old nurse practitioner who was attached to Taipei Medical University, was found dead in her dorm room by her roommate.
It has been reported that the nurse was working night shifts and studying during the day, resulting in her not having enough time to rest. However, the hospital claimed that she was working a normal schedule.
Let’s take a look at her working schedule:
According to her schedule, she had 3 days of consecutive night shift, followed by 3 days of off days (she had to go for internship on her off days). After that, it was another 3 days of night shift and 3 days of night shift (full shift).
The day after the full night shift was another off day for her, meaning that she had to go for internship after a night shift.
On 26 Nov, the night she was supposed to go for her full shift, her roommate found her dead in the dorm room.
If this is considered to be a normal schedule for a nurse, I probably shouldn’t complain about my job anymore.
It was suspected that the cause of her death was due to a heart attack as her weight is on the heavier side. The fact that she was overworking perhaps accelerated her death.
If she is suffering from heart related diseases, why is the hospital making her work all these consecutive night shifts? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m sure hospitals do keep tabs on the health of their doctors and nurses, right?
Besides, the off days should have been used for rest and not internships. We humans are but flesh and blood. Please remember to take care of your body!
Last but not least, let’s remember to thank our doctors and nurses for their hard work.
