McDonald’s might be considered number one when it comes to fast food, but when it comes to finger food…

Old Chang Kee’s not that far behind.

Some might attribute it to their curry puffs, while others, their outlet locations or friendly aunties.

But for us? I’d say it’s their ability to come out with new products that never fail to excite Singaporeans.

New Old Chang Kee Flavours

Previously, we wrote about a new range of flavours released by Old Chang Kee in celebration of their opening at Changi Airport.

The malachar siew and teriyaki chicken flavours.

But besides these three champion flavours, they’ve also quietly included a kaya butter puff in the same launch.

The Kaya Butter Puff

This puff, Old Chang Kee says, is inspired by the traditional (read: official) breakfast of Singapore. Or more specifically, the kaya butter toast.

Old Chang Kee tells you to imagine biting into a crispy, buttery puff and feel the kaya butter oozing into your mouth.

With a disclaimer like that, how could you not try it? Right?

So we did.

Looks

Unlike their usual puffs, the kaya butter buff comes in a rectangular shape, not unlike the shape of Burger King’s Taro pie.

Just as wide but not as long.

Now, if you’re looking to gobble it up the moment you buy it from Old Chang Kee, be warned: it’s hot.

And when you couple it together with the filling, which is simply hot, delicious kaya butter…

You’re going to burn your tongue. No doubt about it.

Now, a wise old man once told me, it doesn’t matter how good something looks, if it doesn’t taste good, it’s not good food.

So read on.

Taste

Old Chang Kee said that they’re inspired by our kaya butter toast when coming up with this product.

And we’ve got to say, they’ve done the toast proud this time.

Perfect crispy, crumbly and flaky crust covers a mind-boggling combination of kaya and butter within.

When you bite into it, the hot kaya butter oozes out onto your tongue with the crust, giving you the taste of kaya mixed with butter.

Basically, it’s like a cross between eating the kaya puff at cake shops, just crispier and kaya toast, just more fragrant.

Fans of Taro Pie from Burger King will love this. Confirm-plus-chop.

Verdict:

After the review above, I think you don’t need me to answer anymore, right?

Just get it.

Go to your nearest Old Chang Kee outlet and get it now. Trust me, it’s that good.

It’s so good, in fact, that Singapore should just make it an official Singapore breakfast just beside our egg and toast breakfast set.

Rating: 5.5/5 stars.

Plus, don’t say bojio, Old Chang Kee is giving away free coffee. I’ve bought two of the puffs for myself yesterday and received this too.
