Unpopular opinion: not everyone likes mooncakes.

I’m just saying (raising my voice to speak over an angry mob) that some people, for example, may not enjoy the texture of the crust. Perhaps it’s too thick, or too sweet.

There’s the snow-skin alternative, but not all foodies are fans of mochi. It could be too mellow for those who are accustomed to flaky or crumbly pastries.

The good news is, the geniuses over at Old Chang Kee are here to change their outlook on mooncakes.

They have decided to give the snack a brand new coat by stuffing mooncakes fillings in a puff.

Woots.

The Salted Egg Yam’O

In conjunction with the fast-approaching Mid Autumn Festival, Old Chang Kee has launched a limited edition puff – the Salted Egg Yam’O.

The cross-section view reveals a gorgeous salted egg yolk smacked right in the middle and swaddled in lavender-hued yam filling.

A delicate pastry shell encases the mooncake-inspired content, forming an adorable flower shape.

They will be lining the heated glass display cases at all Old Chang Kee retail outlets from now till Oct 1, while stocks last.

Expect them to be selling out fast, given the relatively affordable price of S$2.20 per puff.

Prosperous Salted Egg Yam’O Gift Set

You can get the puff as part of the Prosperous Salted Egg Yam’O Gift Set.

At S$5.80, it comes with two Salted Egg Yam’O puffs.

There is a minimum order of 20 sets.

So, should you know a lot of those people who dislike existing mooncake crust options, feel free to send them each a set of these.

That, or if you want to give these instead of mooncakes to your family and friends.

Don’t Stop the Mooncake Party

Speaking of innovative mooncakes, there are kueh lapis mooncakes this time around.

Apparently, their creator The Lapis Place takes lapis very seriously. Years of dedication went into perfecting the recipe.

The mooncakes come in four different flavours: Cempedak, Earl Grey, Pandan and Rainbow.

The last one is literally rainbow-coloured inside and out. I imagine them to taste like this:

Till Sep 30, quote “TLPMAF” during checkout to get 15% off the mooncakes.

Anyhoo, if you are content with regular mooncakes, take a peep at this list of mooncake deals.

Some may have expired, and many of you have long since started chomping on the confection. But, there are still ongoing promotions for a second round of mooncake shopping.

Enjoy!
